More database connections can improve throughput only while they put otherwise-idle resources to work. Once the database reaches a limit such as CPU, memory, storage, or synchronization capacity, extra active sessions compete for the same resources and can reduce throughput while increasing response times. A connection pool can cap concurrent database work and queue requests, but its limit should be tuned for the actual workload—not copied from a universal formula.

Why can more connections slow a database down?

Connections create the opportunity for concurrent work; they do not create more database capacity. When the server has spare resources, allowing more work to run at once can increase throughput. As the limiting resource fills, however, each additional active session has to share it with the others. The result can be slower queries and, beyond the saturation point, less completed work overall.

PostgreSQL’s community guidance describes this as a throughput curve: performance rises as concurrency increases, reaches a saturation “knee,” and can then fall. This is a conceptual model, not a benchmark that predicts the knee for every database or workload. In some cases, letting a transaction wait until capacity is available can finish it sooner than running too many transactions simultaneously. PostgreSQL Wiki: Number of Database Connections

Connections have overhead even when they are idle

PostgreSQL uses a process-per-user client/server model. When a client requests a connection, a supervisor starts a backend process to handle it. Consequently, connections have server-side overhead even if a session is not actively running a query. PostgreSQL also allocates some resources based on its configured connection ceiling. What can become a bottleneck?

The mechanism depends on the workload and system; no single cause explains every slowdown. PostgreSQL community material identifies several possible costs of excessive concurrency:

  • Memory pressure: more sessions and their work can increase memory use.
  • CPU overhead: context switching and cache-line contention can consume processing capacity without advancing useful work as efficiently.
  • Storage contention: concurrent operations may compete for disk resources.
  • Synchronization and internal work: locks and processing shared internal data structures can add contention as connection counts grow.

These are possibilities to investigate, not a guaranteed checklist of causes for every incident. PostgreSQL Wiki: Number of Database Connections PostgreSQL Wiki: Operations Cheat Sheet

Does increasing max_connections improve performance?

Not by itself. In PostgreSQL 17, max_connections sets the maximum number of concurrent connections the server will accept. The documentation says the typical default is 100, subject to system constraints; that is a version-specific default, not a recommended application pool size. Raising the setting increases allocation of some resources, including shared memory, and the setting can only be changed at server start. Check the documentation for your installed PostgreSQL major version before changing it. PostgreSQL 17: Connection and Authentication Configuration

A higher ceiling can let more clients connect, but it does not ensure the database can run more useful work at once. If the active workload already saturates a resource, permitting more simultaneous sessions can add pressure instead of capacity. Treat the connection ceiling as a limit to configure alongside workload and resource measurements, not as a performance knob that is always better when turned up.

How many database connections should you use?

There is no universally optimal number. It depends on the database, hardware, resource limits, and workload mix. A system serving many short requests may behave differently from one running fewer, long or resource-intensive queries. The PostgreSQL Wiki recommends tuning incrementally on the actual system rather than assuming one active connection count fits every workload. PostgreSQL Wiki: Number of Database Connections

  1. Establish a baseline. Observe throughput, response-time percentiles (including tail latency), and database CPU, memory, and storage pressure at the current connection limit.
  2. Change concurrency in controlled increments. Adjust the pool or the number of active workers rather than making a large jump in direct connections.
  3. Compare the same workload conditions. Look for the point where extra concurrency stops improving throughput or worsens latency and resource pressure.
  4. Keep the limit near useful concurrency. If additional sessions mostly wait on the same saturated resource, raising the limit further is unlikely to help.

Will connection pooling make the database faster?

Pooling can improve behavior when an application would otherwise open more simultaneous database connections than the server can handle efficiently. An external pool reuses a bounded set of database connections for application requests. When all connections in that set are busy, new requests can wait for a slot instead of becoming additional active database work immediately. PostgreSQL’s server setup guidance says that if too many connections contribute to memory pressure, lowering max_connections and using external connection-pooling software may be preferable. Pooling is a concurrency control, not a cure for expensive queries. It can reduce connection overhead and database contention, but it cannot remove the cost of a slow query. It also moves some waiting into the pool: evaluate both database response time and time requests spend waiting for a connection.

Direct connections versus a bounded pool

Approach How it handles concurrency Potential benefit Trade-off to monitor
More direct database connections Allows more client sessions to connect directly, up to the server’s configured ceiling. Can increase throughput when the database has spare capacity. After saturation, sessions may compete for CPU, memory, storage, or synchronization resources; a higher PostgreSQL connection ceiling also increases some resource allocations.
Bounded connection pool Reuses a limited set of database connections and queues requests when all are busy. Caps active database work and can avoid overwhelming the server with simultaneous sessions. Requests may wait in the pool; a limit that is too low may constrain useful concurrency, while pooling does not fix query cost.

The useful comparison is not simply the number of open connections. Measure achieved throughput and end-to-end latency, including pool wait time, while watching database CPU, memory, and storage pressure. Pool behavior and the server’s connection ceiling also matter operationally.

When to investigate query performance instead

If a bounded pool still leaves requests slow, more connections may not address the underlying issue. Check whether query execution itself is costly or whether the bottleneck is a particular resource or lock. Pooling can regulate how much work arrives at once; it does not make each query cheaper or remove a bottleneck inside the database.
