Edge’s full-page screenshot is supposed to include content below the visible viewport. If it stops at what you can currently see, the usual cause is not the page length itself. Most failures come from an internal scrollbar, an embedded frame, an unavailable or managed feature, a mobile platform, or protected content that Edge is required to hide.
What Edge’s full-page screenshot is designed to do
Microsoft describes Edge Screenshot (also called Web Capture) as a way to capture a complete webpage, including the parts you would normally scroll to. The command can capture the full page or a selected area, and it is intended for long or moving webpages.
On supported desktop installations, open the Settings and more menu and choose Screenshot or Web Capture, or press Ctrl+Shift+S. Select Capture full page, not Capture area. Functionality can vary by device type, market and Edge version, so two computers may not show identical controls.
The most common reason: the page scrolls inside something else
Nested scroll containers
Edge’s built-in full-page capture follows the document’s main body. Many modern sites do not put all content in that document. A dashboard may keep its table in a scrollable panel; a support app may put messages in a sidebar; a document viewer may scroll inside its own surface. The browser window appears to scroll, but technically the body stays short while another element moves.

A Microsoft Community support discussion describes this limitation directly: full-page capture works when scrolling is positioned in the page body, but does not capture content when the scroll belongs to another element such as a sidebar or frame. This is why a dashboard screenshot can end at the panel’s visible bottom even though more rows exist.
Embedded frames and viewers
An embedded iframe, PDF viewer, presentation viewer or cross-origin application can have its own layout and scrollbar. Edge may capture the outer document while treating the embedded content as a fixed rectangle. If the missing material is inside that rectangle, the result can look truncated even though the outer page was captured correctly.
How to confirm an internal scrollbar
- Scroll over the suspected panel rather than over the page margin. If only that panel moves, it is a nested scroll region.
- Look for a second scrollbar inside a card, table, chat area or viewer.
- Resize the window. If the outer page barely changes while the panel gains or loses its own scrollbar, the panel—not the document body—owns the content.
Other reasons Edge may not produce a full capture
The command is disabled or unavailable
Microsoft’s WebCaptureEnabled policy documentation lists support for Windows and macOS Edge version 87 or later. It also states that the feature is not supported on Android or iOS. On a managed computer, an administrator can disable the policy; when that happens, Screenshot/Web Capture disappears or cannot be used.

If you cannot find Screenshot in the menu and Ctrl+Shift+S does nothing, first verify that you are using desktop Edge, then check whether the browser is managed. A work or school administrator may have intentionally removed the command.

Protected pages can return a black image
Some organizations apply screenshot-prevention policies to sensitive pages. A W3C TPAC 2024 presentation about Edge for Business describes desktop attempts being blocked with a black screen when those policies are active. Banking, medical and confidential corporate pages are examples of content that may be protected. A black result is therefore potentially a security control, not a scrolling defect.
Browser, device and regional variation
Microsoft warns that Screenshot functionality and availability can change by device type, market and browser version. Edge updates can move a command, rename it, or alter behavior. If the same URL works on one desktop but not another, compare Edge versions, operating systems and management status before assuming the site is broken.

A reliable troubleshooting sequence
- Use desktop Edge. The documented WebCaptureEnabled support is for Windows and macOS Edge 87 or later; Android and iOS are not supported by that policy.
- Open the correct command. Use Settings and more → Screenshot/Web Capture or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Select Capture full page. Capture area only records the region you draw, which can look like a failed full-page capture.
- Check the scrollbar owner. If the content moves inside a panel, sidebar, frame or viewer, Edge’s body-based capture may omit it.
- Reload and let the page finish. Expand collapsed sections, wait for tables and images to load, and close transient overlays before capturing. A page that has not rendered its lower content cannot be captured reliably.
- Try DevTools. Press F12 (or open Settings and more → More tools → Developer tools), open the command menu, and run Capture a full size screenshot. Microsoft documents this as the built-in way to capture the whole page, including content outside the viewport.
- Escalate managed or protected cases. If the command is missing on a work device, ask the administrator whether WebCaptureEnabled is disabled. If the result is black, ask whether screenshot-prevention policy is active; do not attempt to bypass a security control.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Wait for the page you actually need
Long pages often lazy-load images or data only after scrolling. In Edge, manually scroll through the page before using Capture full page. In an automated service, use a selector wait, network-idle wait or explicit delay, and enable lazy-image loading where available.
Authenticated and location-dependent pages
A screenshot taken while signed out may show a login page rather than the target. APIs can require cookies, custom headers, Authorization, user-agent, timezone or geolocation. Treat credentials as secrets and avoid exposing them in public URLs or logs.

PNG preserves sharp text and transparency, JPEG is smaller for photographic pages, WebP often balances size and quality, and PDF is preferable for paginated documents. Very tall images can be awkward to open or share; element capture, PDF output or a viewport-sized series may be more practical.

Caching and billing

Common symptoms and fixes
- Only the visible viewport is saved: confirm Capture full page is selected; then check for an internal scrollbar or frame.
- The bottom of a dashboard is missing: capture the specific panel with a selector or use an automation workflow that can scroll that element.
- The Screenshot command is absent: verify desktop Edge and ask whether WebCaptureEnabled is disabled by policy.
- The output is black: treat it as possible screenshot prevention on protected content and contact the site or administrator.
- Images or rows are missing: wait for lazy loading, expand content, or use a selector/network-idle wait.
- The capture is unexpectedly a login page: provide the required session cookies or authorization through a controlled, secure workflow.
- A very tall file is unusable: switch to PDF, capture a meaningful element, resize the output, or split the work into sections.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does updating Edge guarantee that full-page capture will work?
No. Updates can change controls, but an internal scrollbar, embedded frame, administrator policy or protected-content rule can still prevent the result you want.
Can I capture an Android or iPhone page with Edge Web Capture?
The WebCaptureEnabled policy documentation lists the feature as unsupported on Android and iOS. Use a supported desktop workflow or an authorized capture service instead.

Why is a PDF viewer’s lower content missing even though the page itself captured?
The viewer may be an embedded frame with its own scrolling surface. Edge can capture the outer document without expanding that internal surface.
