The claim referred to two built-in features—Startup boost and sleeping tabs—not to a published independent comparison showing Edge beating named competitors.
What Microsoft claimed about Edge 91
In a May 25, 2021 announcement, the Microsoft Edge Team said Edge would be the “best performing browser on Windows 10” when version 91 released later that week. That was Microsoft’s position about its own browser, not a neutral ranking. Microsoft Edge Team announcement
Which features Microsoft cited
Startup boost
Microsoft described Startup boost as keeping a set of core Edge processes running in the background so the browser can launch more quickly. The company said this did not add extra resources when Edge browser windows were open. Microsoft Edge Team announcement Microsoft Build 2021 Book of News
Sleeping tabs
Sleeping tabs puts inactive tabs to sleep so their system resources can be used by tabs that are currently in use. In its version 91 announcement, Microsoft said it had improved the feature so ads could go to sleep as soon as their tab moved to the background. What the “up to 82%” figure means
Microsoft said sleeping tabs could deliver “up to 82% memory savings,” based on internal data collected on preview builds. The figure is a vendor-reported maximum for memory savings, not an overall browser speed score. It does not establish that every device or workload would see that result. Does the announcement prove Edge beat other browsers?
No. The official announcement and Microsoft’s Build Book of News explain the features behind the claim, but do not specify competing browsers, test-machine specifications, workloads, or a reproducible head-to-head benchmark method. A contemporary report also presented “best performing” as Microsoft’s claim and connected the cited feature gains to internal testing. Tom’s Guide, May 26, 2021

A meaningful comparison would need to measure defined tasks—such as launch time, memory use across multiple tabs, and resource use after tabs become inactive—on specified hardware and under repeatable conditions. The cited sources do not provide comparable results across those measures.

The statement was about Edge 91 in 2021. It is not evidence of how current versions of Edge or other browsers perform now; the announcement establishes Microsoft’s feature rationale and historical positioning, not a present-day ranking.
