When Mission Control or Desktop Spaces seems broken, first identify what is failing: opening Mission Control, switching Spaces, finding a window, or staying on the expected desktop. Try another built-in control before changing settings; then check app assignments and display-specific behavior. A gesture or shortcut can be disabled or changed, and a window may be on another Space without that Space being lost.
First identify the symptom
Mission Control and Spaces are related but perform different jobs. Mission Control displays windows and Spaces so you can locate or select one; Space-switching moves you between desktops. An app opening on an unexpected desktop is a separate issue that may come from its assignment or macOS’s app-switching preference.
- Mission Control will not open: Test another entry method, such as Control–Up Arrow or the Mission Control key.
- You cannot change desktops: Use Control–Left Arrow or Control–Right Arrow, or select a Space in Mission Control.
- A window seems missing: Open Mission Control on the display where you expect the window and inspect the Space thumbnails.
- macOS jumps to another desktop: Check the app’s Dock assignment and the preference for switching to a Space with that app’s windows.
Apple describes Mission Control as showing open windows on the desktop in a single layer, and notes that only windows in the current Space are shown when you work in a Space. Apple’s Mission Control guide and Spaces guide explain these behaviors.
If Mission Control will not open, try another route
Apple documents several ways to enter Mission Control. If one does nothing, test a different input method. This helps distinguish a disabled or altered gesture or shortcut from a broader problem.

- Keyboard: Press the Mission Control key, if your keyboard has one, or use Control–Up Arrow.

- Window drag: Drag a window to the top edge of the screen if the relevant option is enabled.
- Hot Corner: Use a corner configured to open Mission Control, if one is set up.
Settings can change or turn off gestures, keyboard shortcuts, and the window-drag behavior. In System Settings, review Trackpad for trackpad gestures, Keyboard for shortcuts, and Desktop & Dock > Mission Control for related Mission Control options and Hot Corners. Labels or available options may vary by macOS version.
If you cannot switch Spaces, use a different control
Try a keyboard shortcut or choose the destination directly rather than relying on the gesture that failed.

If the keyboard route works but the gesture does not, check the input device’s settings rather than assuming Spaces itself has stopped working. Apple documents these navigation methods in its guide to working in multiple Spaces.
If an app or window appears on the wrong desktop
Review the app’s Space assignment
Control-click the app’s icon in the Dock, open Options > Assign To, and check the selected destination. Depending on the setup, the choices can include All Desktops, This Desktop, a desktop on a particular display, or None. The assignment can explain why the app’s windows appear across desktops or on a different one than expected.

Check automatic switching to an app’s Space
macOS can switch to a Space containing an app’s open windows when you switch to that app. To change that behavior, open System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Mission Control and review When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application. When this option is on, changing to an app can also change the visible Space; that is expected behavior, not necessarily a failed shortcut.
Look for a Space in Mission Control
Open Mission Control and inspect the Spaces bar for the desktop containing the window. Apple says up to 16 Spaces can be created; its guide does not state a year for that capacity figure. A window moved to another Space can therefore look missing from the current desktop without the Space itself being gone.

If you use more than one display
Mission Control is display-specific in a way that can be mistaken for missing windows. Apple says that entering Mission Control on a second display shows only the windows and Spaces being used on that display. Open Mission Control on the display where you expect the target window or Space, and check whether the window is assigned to a desktop on another display.
In System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Mission Control, review Displays have separate Spaces. This preference affects how Spaces are organized across displays. Apple also says it must be on to use Split View on other displays or Stage Manager, so consider those features before changing it. See Apple’s Mission Control settings guide.

When to investigate beyond settings
The checks above cover documented control paths and settings; they do not establish a universal fix for every Mac. If the problem persists, record the macOS version, Mac model, input device, display arrangement, the exact action that fails, and whether it affects one app or every app. Those details are needed to choose a version-appropriate next step. The available information does not show that every such symptom calls for restarting, Safe Mode, reinstalling macOS, or hardware service.
