A lithium-ion battery fire can appear to start without warning, but it usually follows a failure inside the battery: heat, damage, aging, a defect or another problem triggers thermal runaway, an uncontrolled self-heating reaction. These fires are a serious challenge for fire services, but the available figures do not establish that lithium-ion fires have become an epidemic. If a battery is smoking, venting or burning, get people away, evacuate and call emergency services.
Are lithium-ion battery fires becoming more common?
Battery fires are a serious and evolving safety concern as battery-powered devices proliferate. But the figures available here measure different things, and neither establishes a nationwide trend in lithium-ion fires specifically.

These counts show why battery safety matters, but they are not directly comparable and do not support calling lithium-ion fires an established epidemic.
Why can a battery fire seem to start by itself?
Thermal runaway is an uncontrolled chain reaction in which a battery cell heats itself. A trigger may be hard to see from outside the pack, so a fire can look spontaneous even when a fault or damage has developed beforehand.

Possible triggers
- Overcharging or exposure to excessive heat
- Age and repeated charge cycles
- Mechanical damage, internal cracking or a manufacturing defect
- Bulging or other physical changes that indicate the pack may be compromised
Warning signs and what may follow
Warning signs include a battery that is bulging, getting hotter, cracking, popping or hissing, or visibly venting gas. During thermal runaway, a battery may release flammable gas, eject burning cells and spread heat from cell to cell. It may also reignite after the flames appear to have gone out. A battery can enter thermal runaway even when there is no active fire.
What should you do if a battery is smoking or burning?
- Move people away. Do not approach the battery to inspect it, take measurements or try an improvised fix.
- Evacuate and call emergency services. Battery fires can grow rapidly, venting gas can explode, and the battery may reignite after apparent extinguishment.
- Follow emergency responders’ instructions. Firefighters use safety zones, cooling, monitoring and procedures suited to the particular battery, device or vehicle.
Do not treat a smoking or venting pack as safe because the flames have stopped. Its condition can change, and reignition is possible.

How can you reduce the chance of a battery failure?
- Use the charger specified by the device or battery manufacturer.
- Do not charge or store batteries in extreme heat.
- Inspect batteries and packs for swelling, cracks, leaks or unusual heat.
- Stop using a damaged or recalled battery.
- Keep batteries away from combustible materials.
Follow the manufacturer’s handling instructions for the particular device and battery. If you are comparing batteries or products, check that certification and battery chemistry are compatible with the intended use; look for evidence about thermal-runaway performance, cooling and reignition behavior, damaged-battery handling instructions, and disposal support. CPSC lists voluntary standards that address hazards such as overheating, fire and explosion, including UL 1642, UL 2743, UL 1310, UL 62133 and ANSI portable-cell standards. A standard’s name alone does not establish that a particular product is certified or suitable for every battery chemistry or use.

Do not put lithium batteries in household trash or curbside recycling. Follow your local hazardous-waste or battery-recycling instructions, and check the device or battery manufacturer’s directions for handling a damaged pack. If it is hot, smoking, venting or burning, treat it as an emergency rather than trying to transport or dispose of it yourself.
