The fix depends on where the image is missing. A blank image in an existing LinkedIn feed, an image that fails while uploading a Page cover, and a missing thumbnail when sharing a website URL are separate problems. Start by identifying the stage, then follow the matching path below.
Identify which LinkedIn image is missing
Use this quick classification before changing settings:
| What you see | Likely owner of the fix | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| A profile photo, post image, or other image already inside LinkedIn is blank or will not load | Your LinkedIn session, browser, account, or LinkedIn itself | Run LinkedIn’s browser troubleshooting sequence |
| A Page or Showcase Page cover image will not upload | Page admin and browser | Check the surface’s image requirements, then retry with LinkedIn’s listed steps |
| A website URL creates no image thumbnail, or the thumbnail is old | Website owner, LinkedIn cache, or Page admin | Check Open Graph/oEmbed data and image accessibility |
| An image upload made through the Marketing API fails | Developer and API request | Check the API’s supported formats and processing errors |
Do not change Open Graph tags to fix a missing profile or feed image. Open Graph and oEmbed describe previews for URLs hosted on a website; they do not control images that LinkedIn is already displaying in its own interface.
When images already inside LinkedIn are not showing
LinkedIn’s general troubleshooting guidance does not establish one universal cause for a missing profile photo or feed image. A practical first test is to change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the problem follows your account, browser, or current session.

- Sign out and sign back in. This refreshes the session without changing account content.
- Open LinkedIn in an incognito or private window. If the image appears there, an extension, stored cookie, or cached resource in the normal profile may be involved.
- Clear the current browser’s cache and cookies for LinkedIn. Close and reopen the browser afterward, then sign in again.
- Try another up-to-date browser. Compare the same profile or post, not a different URL.
- Check the pop-up blocker. LinkedIn lists pop-up interference as a possible source of browser feature problems. Temporarily allow LinkedIn, test, and then restore your preferred blocking setting.
These steps are diagnostic suggestions, not a guaranteed repair. If the image remains missing across browsers or devices, contact LinkedIn support through LinkedIn’s troubleshooting guidance. Include the exact steps that reproduce the problem, your browser name and version, operating system, affected profile or post URL (when appropriate), and a screenshot.
Fix a Page or Showcase Page cover-image upload
A cover-image upload failure is different from an image that disappears after publication. You need Page admin access and should begin with the requirements for the specific Page surface you are editing.
Retry in the order LinkedIn recommends
- Verify the image specifications. Check the dimensions, file size, and other requirements shown for the Page or Showcase Page cover. A file that works in a post may not meet cover-image requirements.
- Save a PNG copy and upload that version. LinkedIn specifically suggests trying PNG when a cover upload fails. This is a troubleshooting step, not proof that PNG is always required.
- Clear cookies, then sign in again. Return to the Page editor and retry.
- Use an up-to-date browser or a different browser. Avoid testing only in a browser profile with many extensions.
- Disable the pop-up blocker temporarily. Retry the upload, then re-enable it if it is not the cause.
Use LinkedIn’s cover-image troubleshooting page for the current requirements and surface-specific instructions. If the same valid file fails after these tests, record the file properties and browser details before contacting LinkedIn.
Why is my LinkedIn link preview image not showing?
When you paste a website URL into LinkedIn, LinkedIn must obtain preview information from that website. LinkedIn Help says the share box relies on oEmbed and/or Open Graph Protocol (OGP) to provide the title, description, and image. The source site can also prevent retrieval—for example, by blocking LinkedIn’s request or storing the image in a protected directory.

Website-owner checks
- Confirm that the shared URL is the canonical page you intend to publish, not a redirect or a page requiring a login.
- Inspect the page’s Open Graph and/or oEmbed information and verify that it identifies an image for the URL.
- Make sure LinkedIn can fetch the image URL. Access controls, a protected directory, or a server rule that blocks the request can stop the preview even when the image opens for you in a normal browser.
- After changing the tags or image access, share the URL again and allow time for LinkedIn to refresh its stored preview.
LinkedIn’s developer-facing guidance states that if an image meets the requirements but does not appear, the website may be blocking LinkedIn from pulling it or the image may be in a protected directory or website. That warning identifies possible access problems; it does not prove a particular firewall, file extension, or JavaScript behavior is the cause in every case.
Page-admin controls
When preparing a post as a LinkedIn Page super admin or content admin, paste the URL into the share box. Use the Edit control below the text box to choose a different preview image or edit the article title, where LinkedIn offers those controls. This is a Page-admin feature and is not a promise that every member can override every preview.
Preview image dimensions and the small-thumbnail behavior
LinkedIn’s Page preview guidance gives a target ratio of 1.91:1 and a size of 1200 × 627 pixels. These are product guidance values, not a guarantee that every URL will render identically. LinkedIn also says an image narrower than 200 pixels appears as a left-side thumbnail instead of the larger image format.
Prepare the source image at the recommended size, keep important text away from edges that may be cropped, and ensure the image URL is publicly retrievable by LinkedIn. If the preview is still absent, return to the metadata and access checks rather than repeatedly resizing an otherwise accessible image.

Allow time for a changed preview to refresh
If you changed the page’s tags or image recently, LinkedIn says to allow 48 hours from the last time the URL was shared before trying again. It also describes this wait in relation to a website tag update. Treat 48 hours as LinkedIn’s stated cache-refresh guidance, not a guaranteed maximum.
During the wait, avoid changing several URLs or metadata systems at once. Keep a record of the old and new image URL, the time of the change, and when the URL was last shared; that makes a support case or later comparison more useful.
Images uploaded through the LinkedIn Marketing API
API failures require a developer-side diagnosis and should not be generalized to ordinary profile, feed, or Page-editor behavior. Microsoft’s LinkedIn Image API documentation lists JPG, GIF, and PNG support and describes broad processing failures such as oversized files, unsupported formats, internal errors, and network failures.
Check the API response and request logs for the specific asset, format, size, and network result. A format accepted by the API does not automatically satisfy a Page cover’s separate requirements, and a successful API upload does not control URL-preview metadata.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The image appears in one browser but not another
Use the working browser as a comparison. Test a private window in the failing browser, then clear its LinkedIn cookies and cache. If the private window works, inspect extensions and pop-up blocking in the normal profile.
The image is missing for several people
Ask another member to open the same post or profile. If multiple accounts and browsers show the same absence, document the URL, timestamps, and screenshots and contact LinkedIn rather than changing website metadata unrelated to that image.
A URL preview shows the title but no image
This indicates that LinkedIn obtained some preview data but may not have been able to retrieve the image. Check the image URL’s accessibility and the page’s OGP/oEmbed data, then wait for the cache interval after correcting it.
The old image remains after a replacement
Confirm that the replacement is attached to the exact URL being shared. LinkedIn’s guidance is to allow up to the stated 48-hour refresh period after the last share or metadata change.

When to contact LinkedIn
Contact LinkedIn when the documented browser and upload tests do not change the behavior, when the same image is missing across accounts or devices, or when a valid Page asset continues to fail. Provide a reproducible sequence, affected URL or Page, browser and version, operating system, file specifications for uploads, approximate times, and screenshots. This gives support enough context to distinguish a session problem from a Page, account, or platform issue.
