If your laptop speakers became quiet, distorted, or crackly after an audio-driver or Windows update, the update may have changed the driver or its components—but timing alone does not prove the cause. Start with the reversible checks below, then use support instructions for your exact laptop model before reinstalling or changing a driver. Driver fixes are model- and audio-chip-specific; a version recommended for one Dell system is not a universal download.
Why can an update affect laptop sound?
An audio driver helps Windows communicate with the laptop’s audio hardware and related software. An update can coincide with a driver problem, but the cause and remedy depend on the laptop model and audio hardware. Dell, for example, documents specific systems where an audio-driver or Windows update is associated with static, distortion, or lost sound. One Dell article attributes distortion on listed systems to Windows Update not installing all audio-driver components; another identifies the driver installation method as relevant for particular Realtek systems. Those cases do not establish that all laptops share the same cause.
First note which symptom you have: unusually low volume, distortion or static, or no sound. Also check whether headphones or another audio output sound normal. That comparison can help distinguish a speaker/output selection issue from a problem affecting audio more broadly, but it does not by itself diagnose a hardware fault.
Try these low-risk checks first
- Check output and volume. Confirm Windows is sending audio to the laptop’s built-in speakers rather than headphones, a monitor, Bluetooth device, or another output. Check both Windows volume and the volume in the app playing sound.
- Restart the laptop. Play audio again after restarting and see whether the symptom changes.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter. In current Windows guidance cited by Dell, open Settings > System > Sound and start the audio troubleshooter. Windows labels and available options can vary by release.
These checks do not alter the installed driver. If the problem remains, gather your laptop’s make and full model, Windows version, audio device or chipset, and recently installed driver version. Then look up the exact model on the laptop maker’s support site and check for a documented issue and its recommended package.

Reinstall or change a driver only for the exact model
Use the laptop manufacturer’s instructions for your model and operating system, rather than downloading a similarly named driver from another model’s page or copying a version number from a forum. Driver packages can differ by audio hardware and by the other components they install.
Dell Realtek systems with static or noise
For the Realtek systems listed in Dell’s static-noise article, Dell recommends uninstalling the Realtek audio driver, downloading the latest package for the specific model from Dell, reinstalling it, and restarting. This is a remedy for the systems covered by that article, not a general instruction for every Dell laptop or other brand.

Dell systems affected by incomplete Windows Update audio components
Dell’s Windows Update distortion article describes affected models where not all audio-driver components were installed. It specifies Realtek version 6.0.9597.1 or later for listed models and a different version for XPS. Those are dated, model-specific instructions in that article; check Dell’s current page for your exact system rather than treating either version as a universal recommendation.
A separate Dell Cirrus no-sound case
Dell documents a different issue on the Inspiron 14 5420, Inspiron 16 5620, and Vostro 5620: no sound associated with Cirrus driver version 2.1.42 following an update. Its model-specific instructions direct affected users to uninstall that driver, install Dell Cirrus 10.0.7.46 A02 or newer, restart, and verify the installed version. Apply this only if your model and circumstances match Dell’s guidance.

If the model-specific audio driver does not fix it
Follow the manufacturer’s next troubleshooting steps before attempting more extensive recovery. Dell’s broader sequence includes checking for BIOS and chipset updates, checking relevant Waves or MaxxAudio services and possible security-software blocks, running the Windows troubleshooter, and installing pending Windows updates. These checks are not interchangeable across laptop brands: use the support instructions for your device and avoid installing firmware intended for another model.
If sound worked before a recent change and the other steps fail, System Restore may be a later option in Dell’s sequence. Consider it only after reviewing the instructions and implications for your Windows installation. If the maker’s diagnostics identify a hardware problem—or the issue remains after its software recovery steps—contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service. Do not assume the internal speakers need replacement without a model-specific diagnosis.

What different symptoms can tell you
- Low volume: Check the selected output and both system and app volume before changing drivers.
- Distortion, static, or crackling: Because driver packaging or installation can matter on some systems, look for an exact-model support notice before reinstalling a package.
- No sound: Confirm the output first, then check whether the laptop maker documents a known issue for your model and driver.
- Headphones work but built-in speakers do not: This narrows the symptom to the built-in-speaker path, but does not alone establish whether the cause is software or hardware.
A headset or external speaker can serve as a temporary alternate output while you troubleshoot; it will not repair the built-in speakers.
