Kaspersky’s automatic transition to UltraAV on some U.S. PCs followed a U.S. Commerce Department restriction that barred Kaspersky from providing antivirus software and related services in the United States or to U.S. persons. Kaspersky and its transition partner said customers had advance notice, but reports at the time described people surprised and confused when the software changed.
Why did Kaspersky uninstall itself?
On June 20, 2024, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced a final determination barring Kaspersky Lab, Inc. and related entities from directly or indirectly providing antivirus software, cybersecurity products, or services in the United States or to U.S. persons. The rule was a U.S. restriction; it was not a worldwide ban. BIS said its investigation identified national-security risks involving Russian government influence, access to sensitive customer information, software privileges, possible installation of malicious software, and the possibility that updates could be withheld. Those are the agency’s stated findings and rationale, not a claim here that each risk was independently proven as conduct by Kaspersky.
BIS urged consumers and businesses to move to another provider. It also said the determination would not impose legal penalties on people merely for continuing to use existing Kaspersky products. The restriction targeted Kaspersky’s provision of products and services, including updates, in the covered U.S. context.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo described the action as part of the administration’s security policy: “The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to a whole-of-government approach to protect our national security and out-innovate our adversaries.”

Why is UltraAV on my PC?
On September 24, 2024, Point Wild said Kaspersky had reached an agreement with Pango Group to automatically transition U.S. customers to UltraAV, with the stated aim of avoiding a gap in protection. Point Wild said the change was arranged for affected U.S. customers; contemporary reporting described Kaspersky being removed and UltraAV installed through a software update intended to facilitate the transition.
Point Wild said its customer communications began September 5 and were sent by email to users with valid addresses, alongside in-app notices, account pages, and Kaspersky websites. It characterized UltraAV’s protection as comparable to Kaspersky’s at the same pricing and cited identity-theft features. Those comparisons are Point Wild’s claims; the cited material does not establish independent testing showing equivalent protection. Despite the stated notices, reports described users who did not expect the change, including confusion and complaints when they found the new software installed. HotHardware documented user reports and quoted a Kaspersky forum employee describing a software update to enable the transition.

When did Kaspersky updates stop?
The dates differ depending on whether you use the regulator’s cutoff or Kaspersky’s wording. BIS allowed certain operations, including signature and codebase updates, until 12:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on September 29, 2024. Kaspersky’s July 18 statement described the prohibition on updates as starting September 30. BIS’s announcement specifies the September 29 cutoff, while Kaspersky’s statement uses September 30 as the start date. These statements should not be collapsed into a single date: one gives the agency’s precise permitted-through cutoff, and the other gives the company’s date wording.
Did Kaspersky automatically install UltraAV on every PC?
No evidence in the cited reporting establishes that every customer or device changed in the same way. Point Wild described an automatic transition for U.S. customers, while HotHardware reported individual experiences of Kaspersky disappearing and UltraAV appearing. The article also recorded complaints that the new software remained after attempted removal, as well as reports from some users outside the United States. These are reported experiences, not proof of identical behavior across all installations or regions.

Is UltraAV a virus?
The reports describe UltraAV as the replacement antivirus product in Kaspersky’s U.S. customer transition, not as a virus. Its unexpected appearance may understandably look suspicious, especially if the user did not see or recognize the notices. Check that the installed program is the software you intended to keep before relying on it, and use current official instructions from the relevant vendor or operating-system maker if you decide to remove or replace it. The cited sources do not verify a current uninstall procedure or independently assess UltraAV’s protection.

What should affected users check?
- Confirm what is installed and active. Check the antivirus app shown on the PC and its protection status rather than assuming Kaspersky is still running because it was previously installed.
- Choose deliberately whether to keep it. Point Wild’s statements about comparable protection, pricing, and identity-theft features are vendor claims, not independent equivalence findings.
- Review the terms before renewing. Confirm current cost, renewal terms, included functions, and availability with the provider; the 2024 transition announcement does not establish current terms.
- Use verified removal guidance. Follow current official instructions for the specific product and Windows version. The reports of removal difficulties do not establish one fix that applies to every PC.
