A red sticker on a recycling bin often means the collection crew has flagged a sorting or contamination problem, and the bin may be left uncollected. But red is not a universal code: the sticker’s wording and your local council or waste contractor’s rules determine what it means and what to do next.
What a red sticker on a recycling bin usually means
In some collection programs, a red sticker warns that the recycling was not sorted correctly or contains material the service does not accept. It is a local warning, not a standardized label: the color alone cannot tell you which item caused the problem or whether your bin will be collected.
For example, Southland District Council’s household collection reminder for Rakiura, New Zealand, states: “RECYCLING NOT SORTED CORRECTLY WILL NOT BE COLLECTED (red sticker).” That is the rule described for that service, not a rule for every recycling program. A separate, historical example comes from Atlanta: a Patch report dated December 11, 2013, described red “violation” stickers for contaminated carts, accompanied by a contamination notice delivered to the door. How to find out why your bin was tagged
- Read the sticker and any door notice. Look for a named contaminant, sorting instruction, symbol, or direction about collection. A notice may identify the issue more clearly than the sticker color.
- Check the current guide for your address. Use the recycling instructions from the council or waste contractor serving your property. Accepted materials and rejection procedures vary, so do not rely on another town’s list.
- Follow the stated correction or contact instructions. If the reason or next collection step is unclear, ask the issuing authority rather than guessing. Do not assume the bin will be collected later or that every service allows rejected recycling to be put out again.
What items can cause a sorting problem?
Only your local service can confirm what belongs in your bin. Rakiura’s council reminder provides one specific example: it says not to put paper, plastic wrapping items, used toilet rolls, wet wipes, used tissues, plastic food packages, used nappies, small goods or meat trays, or any type of bottle top in household recycling. The 2013 Patch account of Atlanta’s program advised residents there to exclude listed contaminants, keep recycling clean and dry, rinse food containers, and close the cart lid. Those directions reflect the program as described at that time; check your local authority’s current guide before applying them.

What to do if the recycling was not collected
Start with the instructions on the tag or notice, then check your service’s current rules for correcting the bin or arranging another collection. The Rakiura reminder says incorrectly sorted recycling will not be collected, but that consequence should not be assumed for other services.
If you live on Rakiura, the same reminder says to set household recycling out by 8 a.m. Tuesday and lists drop-off hours at the Rakiura Resource Recovery Centre for missed collections. Can labels help prevent another sticker?
Clearly labeled bins can help household members separate recycling, food waste, and general rubbish, but a generic label cannot explain why a collection crew tagged a bin. If you add labels, make sure they match your local service’s accepted materials and sorting rules.
