If your Windows 11 clock is wrong, first check whether Windows has the correct time zone: a clock can be synchronized yet show the wrong local time if its zone is incorrect. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on Set time automatically, and use Sync now if needed. If the difference is a whole hour, check the time zone and daylight-saving setting before changing the clock manually.
Check whether Windows is showing the wrong time or only a delayed lock-screen display
Compare the taskbar clock with a trusted current-time reference for your local time zone. If the taskbar is right but the Secure Lock screen appears behind, the display may simply not have refreshed yet. Microsoft says the Secure Lock screen refreshes every 30 seconds and can therefore show a minute change up to 30 seconds late. This is a visual delay; system time remains accurate, and Microsoft says no workaround is needed. The lock screen reached with Windows key + L updates dynamically near the next minute boundary. Microsoft documents the Secure Lock screen behavior.
Turn on automatic time and synchronize the clock
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically.
- If the displayed time is still wrong, select Sync now under Additional settings. Microsoft includes this step in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
Windows also provides a manual option on the same page: turn off Set time automatically, select Change, and enter the date and time. Use manual entry when automatic setting is unavailable or unsuitable; otherwise, automatic time is the routine option described in Microsoft’s date and time settings instructions.
Check the time zone and daylight-saving setting
If the clock is off by a whole hour, check the selected time zone before manually adjusting the time. Windows treats the system time and time-zone choice separately, so a correct synchronized time combined with the wrong zone can produce an incorrect local display.

- On Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on Set time zone automatically if automatic selection is appropriate for the device and location.
- If you need to choose a zone yourself, turn automatic selection off and select the correct zone from the time-zone menu.
- When automatic time-zone selection is off, check Adjust for daylight saving time automatically against the rule for your location. Microsoft says Windows handles daylight-saving time automatically when automatic time-zone selection is on.
These settings and their behavior are described in Microsoft’s Windows time, date, and time-zone guide. A whole-hour difference is a useful reason to inspect these controls, not proof of a particular cause.
Account for changed regional time rules
Time-zone and daylight-saving rules can change, and Windows uses time-zone data to calculate local times. Microsoft recommends getting time-zone updates through Windows Update or its download site rather than editing the registry manually. One example is Microsoft’s October 2022 note about Jordan: a rule change could leave affected Windows devices and date/time-dependent applications 60 minutes off if they did not receive the relevant update. That was a historical, location-specific case, not evidence that the same issue is current or applies elsewhere. The note’s workaround was narrowly scoped, so do not apply it outside the affected location. Read Microsoft’s October 2022 update note for its original scope.

Choose automatic or manual settings
