What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First compare the picture in your encoder with the incoming preview in YouTube Studio. If both are black, investigate the loop file, active scene, or video source. If the encoder shows video but YouTube Studio does not, check the stream output, connection, and any YouTube rights warning. A stream can be connected and still send no visible picture, so a black screen alone does not identify the cause.
Find where the picture disappears
A live-stream encoder is the app or tool that captures and compresses video for streaming. Check its preview while the loop is running; if available, inspect a local recording too. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s image and the sources routed into it (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The encoder preview or local recording is black | The loop media, active scene, or selected video source. |
| The encoder shows video, but YouTube Studio’s incoming preview is black | The encoder output, connection to YouTube, or a warning in YouTube Studio. |
| YouTube Studio shows a warning or placeholder | Read the dashboard message and check the stream’s rights status before restarting. |
Make the comparison while the stream is actually running. An encoder status that says “streaming” confirms a connection attempt, not that the expected image is reaching viewers.
If the encoder preview is black
Verify the active scene and source
- Confirm that the scene currently sent to the stream contains the intended loop media or capture source.
- Make sure the source is enabled and visible, and that it points to the intended file, window, display, game, or camera.
- If the loop is a media file, check that the file opens and plays locally. If it does not, resolve the file or playback problem before changing YouTube settings.
Capture troubleshooting depends on the source type and operating system. OBS maintains separate guidance for game capture, display capture, macOS screen capture, and streaming or encoding; use the path that matches your setup rather than applying a generic graphics setting (OBS Project knowledge-base search for “BLACK SCREEN”).

Check encoder health
Use the encoder’s preview and error messages, check CPU load, and confirm that the intended video source is routed to the output. YouTube recommends using the latest version of the encoder and checking its preview, errors, CPU load, and sources. If the preview is healthy but the problem remains, YouTube suggests checking the connection and, where appropriate, trying another encoder (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
If the encoder shows video but YouTube does not
Open the live dashboard in YouTube Studio and inspect the incoming preview and any alerts. If the encoder’s picture is healthy but YouTube’s received image is not, focus on the path from encoder to platform and the platform’s dashboard messages. YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and connection; the exact next step depends on the encoder and setup.

Do not refresh the stream key just because the picture is black. YouTube’s guidance makes creating or updating a key relevant to certain errors when an encoder cannot start a stream; a black image by itself does not prove the key is wrong.
Check for a YouTube copyright interruption
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. When it identifies third-party material, “a placeholder image may replace your live stream”; if the material continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream (YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams).

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Look for a rights or copyright message in YouTube Studio before repeatedly restarting the encoder.
- If the loop uses music or video, check that you have the necessary rights for live use.
- A licence alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check the rights owner’s requirements and the dashboard status.
A single OBS user report describes a black YouTube preview after a monetization-setting change, but it is anecdotal and does not establish that monetization changes generally cause black screens (OBS Project issue #13291).
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing the stream key without an encoder start error: a key refresh is not a universal black-screen fix. First compare the encoder image with YouTube Studio’s incoming preview.
- Changing graphics or capture settings without identifying the source: the correct fix differs for display, game, window, media, or camera sources and by operating system.
- Repeatedly restarting a rights-flagged loop: check YouTube Studio’s message and the content’s rights status first.
- Assuming a connected stream has working video: check the actual preview or recording, not just the encoder’s connection status.
