A black screen alone does not identify a failed panel or other internal part. Start by checking whether the TV’s own menu appears, then work through the input, source device and connection before considering a model-specific restart.
Why is my TV screen going black?
The symptom can point to several different parts of the setup. The TV may be on the wrong input, a connected device may be off or frozen, an HDMI connection may be loose or damaged, or the TV may need service. Manufacturer troubleshooting guidance describes these as possibilities rather than a diagnosis based on the black screen alone.
What to check first
See whether the TV can display its own menu
- Confirm the TV is on, then press Volume or Home on the remote.
- Look for an onscreen volume indicator or menu. If it appears, the display is producing an image; check the selected input, source device and connection next.
- If nothing appears, continue with the checks below. The absence of a menu does not identify which internal component, if any, has failed.
LG recommends using a volume button to check for an onscreen indicator in its US no-picture/no-sound guidance, dated February 19, 2026, and its US sound-without-picture guidance, dated July 23, 2026.
Read any message on screen
If the TV displays “No Signal,” select the input used by the connected device and confirm that device is powered on. Check that its cable is connected securely at both ends. A set-top box, streaming device or other source may also have frozen; restart that device and check again. LG describes these checks in its US no-picture/no-sound guidance.

How to tell whether the source, cable or TV is involved
Change one thing at a time so you can see which check makes a difference. When practical, try another input or external source. If the problem occurs with only one HDMI source, focus on that device and its cable rather than assuming the TV itself is faulty.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- If available, try a known-working HDMI cable with the same source.
- Try a different source device or input, if your setup allows it.
- Check whether your TV offers an HDMI cable test; availability depends on the model.
Samsung recommends trying different device and cable arrangements to isolate an external cause in its US TV troubleshooting guidance. LG also lists a frozen external device and a loose or damaged HDMI cable among possible explanations for sound without a picture in its US guidance. A black screen alone is not evidence that buying a replacement cable will fix the problem; test the connection first.

How to restart the TV safely
Follow the restart or power-reset instructions for your exact TV model. Button sequences are not universal. For example, LG’s US no-picture/no-sound instructions describe unplugging the TV and holding the physical power button on the TV for about 10 seconds. Use that sequence only if it applies to your model, as described in the LG instructions.
Sony directs owners to the reset steps that apply to their particular TV. A factory reset is different from a basic restart: Sony warns that it erases current settings and requires setup again. Check the applicable procedure in Sony’s Asia TV reset guidance before proceeding.

When to contact the manufacturer or a repair professional
If the screen stays blank after you have checked the input, source device and connections and followed the correct restart instructions for your model, contact the TV manufacturer or a qualified repair professional. LG’s U.A.E. support guidance says a blank screen with no messages may require professional inspection.
These checks cannot establish remotely whether a particular panel, backlight, board or power component has failed, or what a repair would cost. Avoid replacing internal parts based only on the black-screen symptom.
