Most often, the word “looping” refers to a prerecorded podcast file that should repeat while the live broadcast stays on. YouTube’s video and playlist repeat controls do not make a live broadcast restart or make its incoming feed loop. Check the encoder or streaming software’s repeat setting first; if the broadcast itself ends, check the encoder connection and stream start/stop settings.

First, identify what is not looping

“Not looping” can describe several different problems. The fix depends on whether the podcast recording stops, the live broadcast ends, viewers cannot rewind, or an ended stream is expected to replay.

  • The broadcast stays live, but the podcast stops: check the recording or playlist repeat behavior in your encoder or streaming software.
  • The live broadcast ends: check whether the encoder stopped sending content, someone ended the stream, or auto-start/auto-stop settings are affecting the workflow.
  • Viewers cannot rewind or resume: check DVR and the stream’s duration.
  • You expect an ended broadcast to play again: check for an archived replay; it is a video, not a new live broadcast.

If the podcast recording stops inside a live broadcast

The encoder sends the feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key. YouTube’s repeat control for watching a video or playlist is separate from the encoder’s handling of a prerecorded source. The exact repeat control depends on the software you use; YouTube does not document a Studio switch that loops a live stream’s incoming feed. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection workflow, but the repeat setting is specific to the encoder.

  1. Open the encoder or streaming software and check the media source or playlist that contains the podcast recording.
  2. Enable the source’s repeat or playlist-repeat behavior, if available, and verify that the playlist contains the intended recording.
  3. Confirm that the file is still available to the encoder and that playback reaches the end and returns to the beginning.
  4. Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor the audio and video. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the stream before and during a broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming instructions describe the preview workflow.

If the preview also stops at the end of the file while the broadcast remains active, the source or playlist repeat behavior is the likely place to investigate. If the preview continues but viewers report a problem, compare what they see with the feed in Live Control Room before changing the source settings.

If the live broadcast ends instead of continuing

Repeating a media source and keeping a live session active are different tasks. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings concern starting or stopping a stream from the encoder; YouTube does not describe them as media-loop controls. YouTube’s stream settings documentation explains those options.

  • Check whether the encoder stopped sending content or lost its connection.
  • Check whether someone ended the stream in Live Control Room.
  • Review the auto-start and auto-stop settings against the way you intend to start and end the stream.

YouTube’s encoder workflow also allows the creator to end a stream by stopping content from the encoder. If the broadcast ends when the recording reaches its end, verify both the encoder’s source behavior and whether the encoder stops sending to YouTube at that point. The encoder instructions cover sending the feed; the specific lifecycle controls depend on your setup.

If viewers cannot rewind or resume playback

DVR is the live-stream feature for pausing, rewinding, and resuming—not a control for repeating the feed. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours on long streams, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. If you change the DVR setting while a stream is live, YouTube says it applies only to viewers who start watching after the change. YouTube’s DVR instructions explain the setting and its limits.

  1. Check whether DVR is enabled for the stream.
  2. Consider the stream’s total duration, especially if it has run for more than 12 hours.
  3. Ask whether viewers are trying to rewind before the broadcast’s start; DVR cannot provide playback from before the stream began.
  4. If DVR was changed midstream, have affected viewers start watching again after the change.

If you expect an ended stream to replay

An archive is a video available after a broadcast ends; it does not automatically restart the live session. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube’s archive guidance describes this qualification.

YouTube documents repeat controls for watching a video or playlist on the platform. Those controls do not restart an ended live stream. YouTube’s video and playlist repeat instructions cover playback looping.
