A blank Playwright screenshot usually means either the page was empty or not ready when it was captured, or the screenshot options hid the content. First verify the current URL and visible page content; then check transparency, clipping, capture size, and the exact output file. A screenshot can faithfully show a blank page without the capture operation having failed.
1. Confirm Playwright reached the page you intended
Check the current URL, navigation response, title, and body text immediately after navigation. This small diagnostic also helps identify a page that redirected or remained at about:blank:

Check the URL passed to goto, redirects, and whether a later test action changed the page. See the Playwright Page API.
2. Check whether the page had rendered content before capture
Successful navigation does not necessarily mean an application has finished rendering its own content. Immediately before the screenshot, inspect a known locator or visible text, or wait for an application-specific ready state that indicates the content you need is present.

If the DOM is empty or the application shell never appears, inspect browser console errors, page errors, and failed requests. Prefer waiting for the relevant element or state over adding an arbitrary delay: a sleep may conceal a timing race without confirming that the page is ready.
3. Remove screenshot options and try a plain capture
Start with the simplest awaited screenshot, without clipping, masking, or custom styles:

If this image is still blank, investigate the page state and output before restoring options. Add options back one at a time so you can identify which one changes the result. The Page API documents these common causes:
Transparency makes the image look empty
omitBackground: true removes the default white background and permits transparency. Some image viewers display transparent pixels against white or dark backgrounds, making the image appear blank. Try the default background or composite the PNG over a visible color while diagnosing. omitBackground does not apply to JPEG.

The clip rectangle misses the content
If you set clip, confirm its x, y, width, and height. A valid rectangle over an empty part of the page can produce an image that looks blank even when the page has content elsewhere.
The content is outside the captured viewport
fullPage defaults to false, so a screenshot normally captures the viewport, not the whole scrollable page. If the expected content is farther down, use fullPage: true or scroll it into view before capturing.
A mask or injected style covers the page
If you configured masks or screenshot styles, inspect them. Masks cover locator bounding boxes, and injected CSS may hide or obscure content. Temporarily remove these options to see whether the underlying page is visible.
4. Make sure you are opening the screenshot this run produced
page.screenshot() returns an image buffer; when given a path, it also saves the image at that path. Relative paths are resolved from the current working directory. Await the screenshot call, then inspect the returned buffer or the exact file path it wrote. A similarly named older artifact can otherwise be mistaken for the latest capture.

5. Treat PDF navigation as a separate case
Headless mode does not support navigation to a PDF document, according to the Playwright Page API. If the target URL serves a PDF, a blank headless page is not an ordinary HTML-rendering problem.
6. Compare environments if the result changes between runs
If the page state and capture options are correct but the result differs between local and CI, or between browsers, compare the browser version, host OS or container image, viewport, device scale factor, and headed versus headless mode. Playwright notes that browser rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For reproducible visual comparisons, its guidance recommends using the same environment that generated the baseline. See Playwright visual comparisons.
Direct screenshot versus visual assertion
Use page.screenshot() when you need to inspect an image directly. In Playwright Test, expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the last one. That stabilizes a visual assertion; it does not prove that the application rendered the intended content. The assertion is available with the Playwright test runner. Frequently Asked Questions
Does a blank screenshot always mean Playwright failed?
No. It can accurately capture an empty page, or an image that appears blank because of transparency or the selected capture area.
Should I use a longer timeout to fix a blank screenshot?
Not as the first step. Check the visible page state and wait for the application-specific content you expect; a longer arbitrary delay does not establish that the page rendered correctly.
