Why is my new phone battery draining so fast? If you have just set it up or installed an update, the phone may still be restoring data or completing work in the background. If the drain continues, check the built-in battery usage screen before changing settings: it can help distinguish app activity from weak signal, system work, and other causes.
Could setup or a recent update be causing the drain?
A phone can use more power than usual while you set it up, restore a backup, or finish an operating-system update. Apple’s Battery Insights can identify ongoing setup or iOS update activity, and Samsung also lists initial setup as a possible reason a new Galaxy drains faster. These are plausible temporary causes, not proof that setup is the problem.
Apple advises waiting a few days after an update and checking battery life again, because some update tasks continue in the background after the phone is usable. That is Apple’s guidance for iPhone, not a universal settling period for every phone. How to find what is using the battery
Start with the phone’s own battery report. Compare recent days, then inspect the apps or system activity shown during the period when the charge fell. Change one likely cause at a time so you can tell whether it helped.

iPhone: check Battery settings
Open Settings > Battery. Review daily usage and the app and system activity breakdown. Labels such as “Background Activity” indicate an app used power while not on screen. Low or no coverage can point to energy spent searching for a signal, while notification activity can indicate that alerts woke the device. Pixel: review apps and system use
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage, then switch between app and system usage. Tap an app with high use to inspect or adjust its background activity. Google recommends leaving app battery use set to Optimized in general; restrict an app only if it does not need timely refresh, sync, or notifications. Galaxy: inspect battery and background limits
Samsung documents battery controls under Battery and device care and Battery settings, including Optimize now, Background usage limits, and Adaptive battery. The exact path and labels can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Use the battery report to identify an app before limiting its background use. Samsung UK’s Galaxy battery guidance
What to change when the usage report points to a cause
If one app has high background use
Consider restricting background activity for that app if you do not rely on it to refresh, sync, or deliver timely alerts. Avoid disabling background activity, location, notifications, or sync across the board: doing so can interfere with features you use, and may not address the actual cause.

If signal or mobile data use is high
When Wi-Fi is available, use it for internet access; Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than mobile networks. Strong signal also matters: both Wi-Fi and mobile connections use less energy in strong-signal locations. If you will be somewhere without coverage for a while, Airplane Mode can prevent repeated signal searching, but calls will be unavailable while it is on. Apple’s iPhone battery guidance
On supported iPhones, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeable benefit. Samsung notes that some 5G implementations connect over multiple networks, which can contribute to power use. Availability and behavior depend on model, carrier, and network. Apple; Samsung UK

If screen use is the likely factor
Lower brightness or enable Auto-Brightness if that suits your viewing conditions. This is a targeted adjustment when the display is a major part of your use; it will not explain drain that the usage report attributes to an app or poor coverage.
If you need a short-term reduction
Low Power Mode is an option when you need the phone to last longer temporarily. It reduces some functions, so treat it as a short-term measure rather than a diagnosis or proof that the battery is faulty. Apple’s iPhone battery guidance

Restart and check for software updates
Google includes restarting a Pixel and checking Android and app updates among its troubleshooting steps. Use the current update controls for your phone and install updates if available, but an update is not guaranteed to resolve battery drain. Google Pixel Help
When to run diagnostics or contact support
Pixel: use the built-in checks
Google lists Battery Diagnostics for Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. Its overnight procedure is specific to Pixel: charge the phone to 100%, disconnect it from power, leave it idle overnight, and inspect battery usage if the charge loss exceeds 10%. Google treats that as a reason to investigate app and system usage, not as a universal failure threshold for other brands or a standalone diagnosis of a defective battery. iPhone: check Battery Health
Review the battery-health information in Settings. If it shows Service, Apple says to consider battery service. For a new phone, contact Apple or an authorized service provider if the issue persists or the built-in information indicates a problem. Apple’s iPhone battery guidance
Galaxy: seek model-specific support if drain continues
If battery usage does not reveal a clear app or connectivity cause and the drain persists, consult Samsung support for your specific model and software version. Warranty, return, and service options vary by seller, location, and purchase circumstances; check the terms that apply to your purchase.
