If your Nespresso Vertuo POP+ will not brew, start by checking that its water tank is filled and seated, a fresh Vertuo capsule is positioned correctly, and the lever is fully turned to LOCK. Then press the button once and give the machine a moment: it reads the capsule barcode and pre-wets the coffee before liquid appears. The light pattern and whether the machine is brewing, cleaning, or descaling determine what to try next.
Start with water, capsule, and lever
- Check the water tank. Fill it with fresh drinking water and seat it firmly. An empty or improperly seated tank can prevent coffee or water from flowing.
- Check the capsule. Wait until the machine is not brewing, open the head, and eject any used capsule. Insert a fresh, undamaged Vertuo capsule in the correct position.
- Lock the head. Close it and turn the lever fully to LOCK, then press the button once. Do not open the head while coffee is flowing. To stop a brew early, press the button once and wait for the machine to stop before opening it.
A short pause before coffee appears is normal. Nespresso says the machine reads the capsule code and allows time for pre-wetting and infusion before flow begins.
Use the light pattern to identify the problem

| Button is dark | The machine may have switched off automatically after two minutes without use. Press the button or unlock the machine. If it remains dark, check the mains connection, plug, voltage, and fuse. |
| One blink, then one pause | Fill the water tank and make sure the lever is locked. |
| Light blinks while coffee flows normally | This can indicate normal operation, not a fault. |
| Light blinks but coffee does not flow | Allow time for barcode reading and pre-wetting. Then check the capsule, lever, and water. After extensive use, the machine may need to cool. |
| Two blinks, then one pause, continuously | During brewing, check the capsule, locked lever, and water tank. During cleaning, descaling, or emptying, check that the capsule has been ejected and the lever is locked. If the pattern persists, use the restart steps below. |
| Three orange blinks before steady white | This is a descaling alert. Follow the complete descaling procedure in the manual. |
If the machine may be overheated
After extensive use, a blinking light with no machine activity can mean the POP+ needs to cool. Nespresso’s manual directs you to switch it off for three seconds, switch it back on, and let it cool for about 20 minutes before trying again.
Clean it if you see coffee grounds or residue
If grounds appear in the cup, Nespresso directs users to run the cleaning procedure twice. The manual also recommends cleaning monthly, after a long period without use, or when residue is present. Run the rinse cycle without a capsule; it can take up to seven minutes.

Use the model’s manual for the exact cleaning steps. Cleaning may address residue, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every no-brew problem.
Descale only when indicated or appropriate
Three orange blinks before steady white indicate that descaling is needed. Follow the complete Vertuo Pop+ manual procedure rather than improvising or interrupting it. The procedure takes about 20 minutes and cannot be interrupted. The manual specifies one unit of Nespresso descaling liquid mixed with 0.5 L of water and warns that the solution can harm skin, eyes, and surfaces; avoid contact.

- Check that the capsule is correctly positioned; replace it if needed.
- Confirm the capsule has been ejected when the machine is in cleaning, descaling, or emptying mode, and make sure the lever is locked.
- Unplug the machine for 10 seconds, reconnect it, and restart.
- If the fault continues, stop troubleshooting and contact Nespresso. Do not attempt an internal repair.
