If your background image stops short of the page edge, check which element has the image and how its background is sized. background-size: cover fills that element’s background area but may crop the image; contain shows the whole image but may leave space uncovered. Also check whether you mean the visible viewport or the full document as you scroll.
First, check which area you want to cover
A CSS background belongs to an element and is painted within that element’s background positioning area. A background on a short section or wrapper will not automatically fill the viewport or the full scrolling document. Inspect the element with the background-image rule, its dimensions, and its computed styles in your browser’s developer tools.
- Only the initial screen: the relevant element needs to cover the viewport.
- The full page while scrolling: the background must be associated with the document-level painting area and behave correctly as the document grows.
For a document background, inspect the computed styles of both body and html. Browsers can propagate the body background to the root canvas when the root has no background image and a transparent background color. MDN notes that containment on either html or body prevents this propagation, and says specification authors recommend setting document background styles in the body block. Choose between filling the area and showing the whole image
The sizing choice determines whether the image fills its positioning area or remains fully visible. MDN describes these behaviors in its background-size reference.

Use cover when filling the area matters more than keeping every edge visible. Use contain when the full image must remain visible; add background-repeat: no-repeat if you do not want it repeated. With cover, change background-position to control which part of the image stays visible.
Try a viewport-filling starting point
This example targets the initial viewport. It is a starting point, not a diagnosis of your page’s specific CSS:

}min-height: 100vh gives the body a minimum height equal to the viewport; it can still grow with its content. If you need the background to cover the entire scrolling document, verify the document-level element’s dimensions and painting behavior rather than assuming a viewport-sized section will cover it.
Check for transparency or a missing image
Areas not covered by the image—including transparent pixels—show the background color. The color also provides a fallback if the image cannot load. The CSS references describe the color showing through uncovered or transparent areas and recommend specifying a color for when an image is unavailable: MDN’s background-size reference and the CSS 2.1 background properties specification.
