DJI is getting compared with Huawei because U.S. officials have raised national-security concerns about technology from Chinese companies—not because the two companies faced identical laws or restrictions. The public debate about DJI has involved concerns about data security, a 2017 U.S. Army restriction on DJI products in Army systems, and later federal action affecting foreign-produced drones and critical components. Those developments have different scopes, and the concerns do not by themselves prove that DJI sent U.S. users’ data to Chinese intelligence.

Why the Huawei comparison came up

In an August 26, 2019 article, CyberScoop reporter Jackson Barnett used Huawei as a comparison for the scrutiny facing DJI, a Chinese drone maker. The parallel was political and national-security-focused: U.S. officials and security researchers worried that Chinese technology could expose data or infrastructure to Chinese state interests. It was not a claim that DJI and Huawei were subject to the same legal measures or that evidence against one established wrongdoing by the other.

The concern about DJI centered on the possibility of sensitive flight or location data being accessed or misused, as well as criticism of the company’s cybersecurity practices. The CyberScoop account discussed concerns about vulnerability disclosure and quoted DJI acknowledging that its consumer-market focus had left it behind in enterprise cybersecurity. Those are descriptions and statements from 2019, not a current technical audit of every DJI product.

What restrictions applied, and to whom?

The measures described in the 2019 article concerned military procurement and government systems. Later FCC actions arose through a separate national-security process. Keeping those timelines and authorities distinct is essential to understanding what “the Huawei treatment” does—and does not—mean.

Measure What it covered What it did not establish
2017 U.S. Army directive, as described by CyberScoop in 2019 Restricted DJI products from Army systems. The article said the directive cited a classified report titled “DJI UAS Technology Threat and User Vulnerabilities.” The report’s details were not public in the article. The directive was not described as a ban on every DJI product for every U.S. civilian.
Proposed FY2020 NDAA amendment, as described by CyberScoop in 2019 Would have barred Chinese-made drones and Chinese-manufactured parts from military purchases; the article noted that waivers could apply. A proposal is not proof that the provision became law in that form, and the account did not describe it as a general consumer restriction.
FCC Covered List action announced December 22, 2025 The FCC said foreign-produced unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and UAS critical components were added to the Covered List after an executive-branch interagency determination that they posed “unacceptable risks to the national security of the United States and to the safety and security of U.S. persons.” The notice is a later FCC action, not the basis for the 2017 Army measure. The notice alone does not settle every practical question about importing, marketing, existing authorizations, or using a particular drone.

The FCC’s December 2025 notice described a path for the Department of War or Department of Homeland Security to make a specific determination that a particular UAS, class of UAS, or critical component does not pose the identified risks. On January 7, 2026, the FCC announced exceptions for certain UAS and components approved by the Department of War and those meeting the Buy American standard; the release also described a temporary date limit for some exceptions. Because the FCC’s rules and proceeding status can change, check the latest FCC materials for a decision about a specific product or activity.

What was—and was not—shown about DJI data

The 2019 CyberScoop article distinguished concerns and allegations from demonstrated data transfers. It reported that publicly available evidence had not shown mass U.S. user data being delivered to Chinese intelligence services. It also described congressional testimony and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) report that raised concerns. A risk assessment or allegation is not the same as evidence that a particular transfer occurred.

Charging times: With QC3.0/5V3A and dual USB-C input, it takes approximately 150 minutes for three batteries (around 50 minutes per battery). With QC3.0/5V3A and single USB-C input, it takes about 240 minutes for three batteries (around 80 minutes per battery).

DJI told Congress, in a letter quoted by CyberScoop, “DJI drones do not share flight logs, photos or videos unless the drone pilot deliberately chooses to do so. They do not automatically send flight data to China or anywhere else.” That is DJI’s position as reported in 2019, not an independent verification of every product, configuration, or setting.

The article also described DJI’s local mode as keeping almost all flight data on the device, while warning that reduced connectivity could affect functions. It noted that some services were turned off when GPS location sharing was not enabled. The account did not independently test the full range of DJI’s current consumer products, so it cannot establish how every present-day model or configuration handles data.

What the Interior-related testing found

CyberScoop described a Department of the Interior study of a government-tailored enterprise configuration. In the final edition under the test cases described, the study found no noticeable data leakage. That is a bounded result for the tested configuration and cases—not a blanket security certification for DJI drones.

  • The testing partner, Drone Amplified, assessed connectivity but did not audit DJI source code or reverse-engineer applications.
  • Drone Amplified said it lacked cybersecurity-specific expertise.
  • The result concerned a government-tailored enterprise edition, not every consumer model, software version, or operating setting.

These limits matter in both directions: the test does not prove that all DJI products are secure, and the account does not show that the tested configuration leaked data.

What the 2019 market-share figure means today

CyberScoop reported that DJI accounted for 80 percent of U.S. drone sales in 2019. That is a historical figure reported in the article, not a current market-share estimate. No current comparable figure is established here, so it should not be used to describe today’s U.S. drone market.

How to read “the Huawei treatment”

The phrase captures the broad political suspicion directed at Chinese technology firms, but it can obscure important differences. The Army restriction and proposed military-purchase measure described in 2019 had a procurement focus. The FCC’s 2025–26 actions concern foreign-produced UAS and critical components under a distinct FCC process. Meanwhile, the public evidence summarized in the 2019 article included concerns, company statements, and limited testing—not a public demonstration that DJI had transmitted U.S. user data to Chinese intelligence.
