Usually, the link is either an intentional iCloud Link shared from Photos or a Mail Drop download link used for a large email attachment. To send a photo as a regular attachment, turn off iCloud Link in the Photos share options or attach the image from Mail’s Photo Library. An inline image in a draft does not, by itself, tell you which delivery method was used.
Why an iPhone photo email may contain a link
Photos shared with iCloud Link
When someone shares photos or videos from the Photos app, the share options can enable iCloud Link. That sends a URL the recipient can use to view or download the media, rather than putting each photo into the email as a conventional attachment. Apple says these links remain available for 30 days. Apple’s iPhone Photos guide describes the option as sharing a URL to view or download photos or videos.
Large attachments sent with Mail Drop
Mail can offer Mail Drop when a file exceeds the maximum attachment size allowed by the sender’s email account. Mail Drop uploads the file through iCloud and gives the recipient a link to download it. Apple says Mail Drop supports attachments up to 5 GB and that recipients have 30 days to download them. These are Apple’s Mail Drop limits; the recipient’s email service may impose a smaller message-size limit. Apple’s Mail Drop limits and requirements explains the service and restrictions.
Inline appearance does not prove it is a link
Mail can display an attachment inline in a draft, and how it appears can vary with file size. A picture shown in the message body is not enough to determine whether the message will deliver a regular file or a link. Check the sharing method and any Mail Drop prompt instead. How to send a photo as a regular email attachment
- If you start in Photos: Select the photo or video, open the share sheet, and check Options. Turn off iCloud Link if you want to avoid sending a Photos URL, then continue through the email workflow.
- Or attach from Mail: Open a draft and tap in the message. Use the attachment actions above the keyboard, choose Photo Library, select the photo or video, and return to the draft. Apple documents this method for adding saved media to an email.
- Watch for a size prompt: If Mail says the file exceeds the account’s maximum size and offers Mail Drop, accepting that option means the recipient may receive a download link rather than a conventional file attachment.
If the sender did not enable iCloud Link and Mail did not use Mail Drop, the link’s appearance alone does not identify the cause. Ask the sender how they shared the image and whether Mail showed a size prompt; inspect the message’s attachment or link controls before assuming it was sent as a file.
Which sharing method should you choose?
