If Instagram Reels suggestions feel off, you can steer them with Not interested, use Interested where it appears, filter some caption terms with Hidden Words, or reset suggested content across Feed, Reels, and Explore. These controls can help Instagram adjust, but Meta does not promise an immediate or permanent fix.
Why Instagram may recommend Reels you do not want
Instagram personalizes recommendations using signals such as interests you express and actions you take across Meta apps. If your past activity no longer reflects what you want to see now, suggestions may feel mismatched. Meta has described these signals in broad terms, not published a complete technical specification of how Reels are ranked. Meta’s Recommendation Guidelines explain the general approach.
Recommendation eligibility is another factor. Meta says some content may be allowed on Instagram but not eligible for recommendation distribution. So seeing less of a topic—or not seeing certain content recommended—does not necessarily mean the content was removed or prohibited. The eligibility distinction is described in Meta’s guidelines.
Meta’s explanations do not reveal the reason a particular Reel appeared for a particular person. If Instagram shows a Why Am I Seeing This? explanation for a Reel, that in-app explanation is the relevant account-specific clue; availability can vary.

Choose targeted feedback or a broader reset
For an isolated unwanted topic, targeted feedback is less disruptive and lets you preserve recommendations you still find useful. A reset is broader: it clears suggested content across Feed, Reels, and Explore, after which Instagram personalizes suggestions again over time based on what you interact with.

How to reset suggested content
- Open Instagram and go to your Profile.
- Tap More options (the three-bar menu), then Content preferences.
- Tap Reset suggested content, review and accept the terms, and confirm.
- After the reset, review the accounts you follow and unfollow any whose content you no longer want in your recommendations.
Meta says the reset affects recommendations across Feed, Reels, and Explore, and that recommendations personalize again over time from the content and accounts you interact with. The feature may not appear for every account, and labels or availability can change. See Meta’s reset announcement for the documented behavior.

How to steer individual Reels and filter terms
Mark a Reel as Not interested
On a recommendation you do not want, open its three-dot menu and select Not interested. Meta says this feedback helps shape recommendations. Use it for unwanted suggestions without clearing recommendations across other surfaces. Meta’s Instagram feature announcement describes this control.
Mark a Reel as Interested
If Instagram offers Interested on a recommendation, select it to signal that you want more like it. The option’s availability varies by surface and rollout, so it may not appear in every Reel menu. Meta has described the feature in its recommendations reset announcement and its explanation of how AI influences what people see.

Use Hidden Words for caption terms
Hidden Words can hide some recommended content containing words or phrases you specify in captions. This is a term filter, not a universal ban on a topic: a Reel about the same subject may still appear without those words. Meta describes the control in its reset announcement and Instagram feature announcement.
What a Reel’s explanation can—and cannot—tell you
Meta has described expanding Why Am I Seeing This? explanations in Instagram Reels and Explore. If the option appears on a Reel, use it to see the explanation Instagram provides for that recommendation. It may not be available for every account or item. Meta has also said it consulted 50 leading experts while developing its Recommendation Guidelines. That is a count of experts consulted; it does not establish how accurate or effective any individual recommendation is. Meta’s guidelines announcement provides that context.

On October 1, 2025, Meta announced that, beginning December 16, 2025, interactions with Meta AI would be used to personalize content and ad recommendations in most regions. Meta’s example was that discussing hiking with Meta AI could inform hiking-related recommendations. The announcement says feed and ad controls remain available. This describes an announced personalization signal; it does not show that an AI conversation caused any particular Reel to appear. See Meta’s announcement about AI and recommendations.

What to expect after giving feedback
- Instagram recommendations reflect activity and expressed interests, which may include signals that no longer match your preferences.
- Not interested, Interested where available, Hidden Words, and reset are documented ways to steer or refresh suggestions.
- A reset covers Feed, Reels, and Explore; subsequent recommendations personalize again from later activity.
- Meta does not quantify how long feedback or a reset takes to change recommendations, or guarantee that the result will be better.
- Controls, labels, and availability may change by account, feature rollout, or region.
