Identify the image type and the stage where it disappears, then apply the matching fix below.
First, identify what Chrome is printing
Chrome can print a live webpage or a PDF opened in a Chrome tab. These paths do not always expose the same settings. A PDF viewer may show a different dialog, and the Background graphics control can be unavailable there. If you need the webpage’s layout and controls, return to the page itself before troubleshooting.
- Open the webpage, not a PDF viewer tab.
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on macOS.
- Look at the preview and expand More settings.
Note exactly what is missing: a CSS background, an ordinary image element, an SVG or canvas drawing, or an image that has not finished loading. Also note whether the preview is wrong or whether the preview is correct but paper output is not.
The quickest fix for a normal webpage
Enable Background graphics
In Chrome’s print settings, expand More settings and turn on Background graphics. Chromium labels this option as printing webpage backgrounds. It is intended for CSS backgrounds such as certificate stationery, colored panels, hero artwork, watermarks and decorative sections.

Preview the page again. This setting primarily affects CSS background painting; it does not repair an <img> that is hidden by print CSS, has zero dimensions or failed to load.
If the option is missing
- Confirm that you invoked print on the webpage rather than inside Chrome’s PDF viewer.
- On a work or school computer, an administrator may have set the default for background printing or prevented users from changing it.
- Try saving the webpage as a PDF. If the PDF is also missing the image, the problem is in page or print rendering rather than the physical printer.
Why the screen can look right while print preview is blank
Chrome uses a separate print rendering mode
Web pages can define rules inside @media print. Those rules apply only to paper or PDF output, so a page may look perfect on screen while print preview hides an image, swaps its source, changes its size or moves it outside the printable layout. A responsive breakpoint, a print-only template or a rule inherited from a component can have the same effect.
Print optimization can omit backgrounds
Browsers optimize output to reduce ink and improve readability. MDN documents that the default print-color-adjust: economy allows the user agent to alter an element, including omitting background images. print-color-adjust: exact requests preservation of the designed appearance, but a user’s print preference still takes priority.
Backgrounds and foreground images are different
An image in <img src="..."> is foreground content. An image supplied by background-image is background paint. The print dialog’s Background graphics switch addresses the latter. Treating every missing picture as the same type often leads to the wrong fix.
Fix a page you own with print CSS
Add a print stylesheet or an @media print block. The following example keeps an essential figure visible and asks Chromium to preserve intentional colors and backgrounds:

Check the rules that can still remove an image
display: noneon the image or a parent.visibility: hidden, zero width or height, or an overflow container that clips it.opacity: 0or a print-only alternate image with an empty source.- A later rule or more-specific selector that overrides your correction.
- Different
srcsetselection or a print-specific URL that returns an error.
Use !important sparingly; first remove the conflicting print rule or reduce selector ambiguity. Keep decorative images optional and mark essential information in text or captions so the document remains understandable without color or background art.
Diagnose the missing image in DevTools
- Open Chrome DevTools with F12 or Command+Option+I on macOS.
- Open the three-dot menu, choose More tools > Rendering.
- Under Emulate CSS media type, choose print. Chrome’s DevTools documentation describes this as forcing print-preview mode for inspection.
- In Elements, select the missing object and inspect the Computed panel.
Record the print-state values for display, visibility, width, height, opacity, content, background-image, and the resolved src or srcset. Then classify the failure:

Check lazy-loaded assets
Some pages load images only after scrolling or after an intersection observer fires. A print operation can occur before that code runs. Scroll through the page once, wait for the image to appear, then print. On a site you control, use a print-safe loading path or ensure the image is available before invoking print; do not rely solely on a viewport-triggered observer.
Separate browser rendering from printer hardware
When the preview is already wrong
Fix the page, print media rules, asset loading or Background graphics setting. Changing paper, ink or the printer driver cannot restore an image that is absent from the generated PDF.

When the preview is correct
Choose Save to PDF. Open the saved file and verify the image. If the PDF contains it but the paper copy does not, investigate the printer driver, paper-size choice, printable margins, color mode and device-specific settings. A printer may crop or suppress edge-to-edge artwork even though Chrome generated it correctly.
Common failures and precise remedies
“Background graphics” is unchecked every time
Chrome may remember a preference, or an enterprise policy may set the default or lock the control. On a managed device, ask the administrator to review the policy governing background-graphics printing. For personal use, enable the option each time it is needed and consider whether the design should rely on backgrounds at all.

Background graphics will not normally fix it. Emulate print media, inspect computed styles, confirm nonzero dimensions, and test the image URL directly. Check for a print-only selector, a failed responsive source, authentication requirements or a lazy-load race.
The page prints a different image
Inspect srcset, sizes, picture sources and any print-specific markup. Print CSS can also replace content with a pseudo-element or hide the screen version. Make the intended print source explicit and verify it under emulated print media.
A chart or logo is blank
Determine whether it is canvas, inline SVG or an external SVG. Canvas may depend on script timing; SVG may depend on external styles or resources. Wait until drawing completes, inline critical styles where practical, and provide a raster fallback for documents that must print reliably.

The image appears after returning to screen view
This usually indicates a print-only rule or a rendering transition. Compare computed styles with media emulation on and off. Search all loaded stylesheets for @media print, display:none, visibility, and selectors targeting the image’s parent.

Designing reliable printable pages
- Put essential information in text, captions or borders rather than only in a background image.
- Use a dedicated print stylesheet to remove navigation and controls without hiding report figures.
- Give figures predictable print dimensions and avoid layout containers that collapse when flex or grid rules change.
- Test both a normal
<img>and a CSS background intentionally; they exercise different user controls. - Test Chrome’s webpage path and the PDF-viewer path if users commonly print downloaded PDFs.
- Test with Background graphics off, because some users and managed environments cannot enable it.
