FeeKit addresses a common invoicing gap: the amount a freelancer charges is not always the amount a payment processor deposits. A percentage fee and a fixed per-transaction charge can reduce the payout, so the useful questions are both “What will I net from this invoice?” and “What should I charge to receive a specific amount?” FeeKit presents a browser calculator for estimating those figures.
Why a fee calculator is useful
A quote or invoice usually states the gross amount the client owes. The freelancer’s payout can be lower after payment processing fees. The difference matters when setting a project price, choosing a payment method, or checking whether a target take-home amount is likely to arrive.
A public Reddit post phrased the question as, “If I charge X on Stripe, what do I actually get after fees… and what should I charge to net a clean amount?” That is a useful example of the problem, not evidence about how common it is.
How FeeKit describes its calculations
Estimate the net from a gross charge
FeeKit describes its standard forward calculation as:

Fee = gross amount × percentage rate + fixed fee
Net payout = gross amount − fee
Both parts of the fee matter: the percentage grows with the transaction amount, while the fixed charge is applied per transaction under the selected fee model. As a result, the deduction depends on the amount and the payment method or rate selected.
Work backward from a target payout
In reverse mode, the starting point is the amount you want to receive. The calculator solves for a gross charge intended to leave that amount after the selected deductions. The answer depends on the fee model and rates entered or selected; it is an estimate, not a guarantee of the final deposit.

Rates depend on the transaction
There is no single payment-processing rate that applies to every freelancer or transaction. For example, Stripe’s official US pricing page lists 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic online card transaction. The same page lists additional charges of 0.5% for manually entered cards, 1.5% for international cards, and 1% where currency conversion is required. These are the figures published on Stripe’s US pricing page as observed in 2026, not universal or account-specific quotes. Stripe says fees depend on the customer’s payment method; check your account and transaction details before relying on a calculation.
For cross-border work, distinguish the customer’s country from the currency in which funds are paid out. Payment processing and currency conversion can be separate cost considerations. A comparison calculator that exposes client country and payout currency as separate inputs reflects that distinction, and notes that published rates vary by country, account type, and payment method. See the comparison tool for those input distinctions; do not assume one provider is always cheapest.

What to compare before sending an invoice
For a meaningful comparison, hold the invoice amount or target payout constant and check the transaction details that affect the fee:
- Processor and payment method: a card, manually entered card, and other payment methods may have different schedules.
- Domestic or international context: confirm how the processor defines the transaction and which country-specific pricing applies.
- Currency conversion: establish whether the payment or payout requires conversion and whether an additional charge applies.
- Percentage and fixed fee: include both components where the applicable schedule uses them.
- Calculation direction: start with the gross invoice amount to estimate net proceeds, or start with a net target to estimate the gross charge.
- Account-specific schedule: check the current published pricing and your own account terms, since country, account type, and payment method can change the applicable rate.
What FeeKit says about its implementation
FeeKit’s methodology page says its calculations run in the browser using pure TypeScript and use explicit cent rounding. It describes support for domestic and cross-border commercial rates for Stripe, PayPal, Square, Venmo, Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy, and Authorize.Net. Those are FeeKit’s stated implementation and support claims; they are not independent verification that every listed rate is current or that every calculation has been tested.

FeeKit’s methodology also states: “We do not transmit transaction values, invoice sums, or client revenue numbers to external APIs.” That is the site’s own privacy and architecture claim, not the result of an independent security audit.
What the estimate does—and does not—tell you
A fee-and-payout calculation answers a specific question under the selected fee model: what remains after the modeled payment-processing deduction. It should not be treated as a complete accounting of taxes, payout timing, refunds, foreign-exchange costs beyond those included in the selected model, or other possible deductions. For the amount that will actually be deposited, verify the current processor schedule and your transaction details.
