A blurry canvas screenshot usually means the canvas’s internal bitmap has fewer pixels than its displayed size—or that the export is using a lower pixel ratio than the screen. Set the bitmap dimensions to the displayed CSS size multiplied by devicePixelRatio, apply one matching context transform, and redraw. For crisp downloads, export a lossless PNG and check any library’s export-ratio setting.

Why does an HTML5 canvas look blurry?

A canvas has two sizes that matter: its internal bitmap dimensions, set by canvas.width and canvas.height, and its displayed dimensions in CSS pixels. The HTML Standard gives a new canvas default bitmap size of 300 × 150 pixels and allows it to be rendered at a different CSS size. When CSS stretches a smaller bitmap to a larger box, the browser interpolates the image, which can make edges and text appear soft. The HTML Standard describes the canvas coordinate space and bitmap behavior.

High-density displays add another mismatch: a CSS pixel can correspond to multiple physical device pixels. If the bitmap has only one pixel per CSS coordinate, the browser enlarges it for display. Apple’s archived HTML Canvas Guide explains the Retina issue and recommends multiplying canvas backing-store dimensions by the device-pixel ratio.

How to make a canvas sharp on Retina and high-DPI screens

Use the element’s actual displayed size to set its bitmap size. Then scale the drawing coordinate system once so existing drawing code can continue to use CSS-pixel coordinates:

const canvas = document.querySelector('#canvas');
const ctx = canvas.getContext('2d');

function resizeCanvas() {
  const rect = canvas.getBoundingClientRect();
  const ratio = window.devicePixelRatio || 1;

  canvas.width = Math.round(rect.width * ratio);
  canvas.height = Math.round(rect.height * ratio);
  canvas.style.width = `${rect.width}px`;
  canvas.style.height = `${rect.height}px`;
  ctx.setTransform(ratio, 0, 0, ratio, 0, 0);

  draw();
}

function draw() {
  // Draw in CSS-pixel coordinates. For example:
  // ctx.fillRect(10, 10, 120, 40);
}

resizeCanvas();

Assigning canvas.width or canvas.height resets the bitmap and drawing state, so set both dimensions before calling setTransform() and redraw afterward. The transform makes a coordinate such as 10 map to the corresponding device-pixel position while your drawing code remains expressed in CSS pixels.

Keep the backing store in sync with responsive layout

If the canvas can change size because of a responsive layout, sidebar, or container resize, run the sizing function again whenever its displayed dimensions change. A ResizeObserver is one practical way to detect that:

const canvas = document.querySelector('#canvas');
const ctx = canvas.getContext('2d');

function draw() {
  // Redraw the complete scene here.
}

function sizeCanvas() {
  const rect = canvas.getBoundingClientRect();
  const ratio = window.devicePixelRatio || 1;

  canvas.width = Math.round(rect.width * ratio);
  canvas.height = Math.round(rect.height * ratio);
  canvas.style.width = `${rect.width}px`;
  canvas.style.height = `${rect.height}px`;
  ctx.setTransform(ratio, 0, 0, ratio, 0, 0);
  draw();
}

new ResizeObserver(sizeCanvas).observe(canvas);
sizeCanvas();

Do not repeatedly multiply the current bitmap dimensions by the ratio. Calculate dimensions from the current CSS rectangle each time, set the bitmap dimensions, reset the transform to the ratio, and redraw. Otherwise, successive resizes can compound scaling or leave the drawing state inconsistent.

Why is the downloaded canvas image blurrier than the preview?

canvas.toDataURL() exports the bitmap stored in the canvas; it cannot recreate detail that was never drawn into that bitmap. Fix the backing-store size before drawing if the screenshot itself is low-resolution. If the on-screen canvas is sharp but a library-generated download is soft, inspect that library’s export pixel-ratio option: export resolution may be independent of the screen ratio.

For text, diagrams, interfaces, and line art, PNG is generally the safer choice because it avoids JPEG’s lossy compression. A basic browser export is:

const pngUrl = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');

Apple documents PNG as the default canvas output and supports a quality argument when JPEG is requested. That quality setting adjusts JPEG compression; it does not increase the bitmap resolution. See Apple’s Canvas Guide.

Set the export ratio when using a canvas library

Some libraries expose an export pixel ratio distinct from the display pixel ratio. For example, Konva documents that toDataURL() defaults to pixelRatio: 1. Request a larger ratio if the exported image must contain more pixels:

const dataUrl = stage.toDataURL({ pixelRatio: 2 });

Choose a ratio for the required output dimensions, rather than assuming the screen’s high-DPI setting is automatically applied to an export. Konva’s high-quality export documentation describes this option.

Should image smoothing be on or off?

For photographs, illustrations, and ordinary interface artwork, leave smoothing enabled. It is the default, and it makes scaled images look less jagged. MDN’s documentation for imageSmoothingEnabled notes that the default is true; the HTML Standard specifies nearest-neighbor interpolation when smoothing is disabled.

For pixel art or sprites designed to retain hard, blocky pixels, disable it before drawing scaled images:

ctx.imageSmoothingEnabled = false;
ctx.drawImage(sprite, x, y, width, height);

This changes the interpolation method, not the source image’s resolution. Turning smoothing off will not fix an undersized canvas bitmap; it may instead make a low-resolution image look visibly jagged. See the HTML Standard’s canvas drawing rules.

Choose the fix that matches the symptom

Symptom or need What to change Trade-off
Canvas is soft on a Retina or high-DPI screen Set bitmap width and height from displayed CSS dimensions multiplied by devicePixelRatio; apply one matching transform and redraw. More backing-store pixels consume more memory.
Canvas is blurry only after download Check the export dimensions and any library’s export pixel-ratio option; use a sufficiently large output bitmap. Larger exports require more memory and may exceed browser canvas limits.
Scaled pixel art looks smeared Set imageSmoothingEnabled = false before drawing the scaled image. Nearest-neighbor scaling is intentionally blocky and is not appropriate for photographs or normal UI artwork.
Text or line art looks degraded in a JPEG Export as PNG when a lossless screenshot is preferred. Format choice does not add missing source pixels.

Common canvas screenshot problems and fixes

  • The CSS box is larger than the bitmap. Check canvas.width and canvas.height, not just CSS width and height. Set the bitmap to the displayed size times the device-pixel ratio.
  • The canvas looks soft only on a high-DPI display. Recalculate its backing store using window.devicePixelRatio, then redraw.
  • The screen is crisp but the download is not. Inspect the exported image’s pixel dimensions and the library’s export pixel-ratio setting; a screen-resolution setting does not necessarily control export resolution.
  • Scaled artwork is smoothed when it should stay pixelated. Disable imageSmoothingEnabled before drawing the scaled source. This only changes interpolation.
  • Text or thin lines look worse in JPEG. Prefer PNG for lossless capture of crisp edges.
  • toDataURL() returns data:,. MDN documents this result for zero-sized or over-limit canvases. Confirm that both bitmap dimensions are nonzero and reduce the export dimensions or ratio if the canvas exceeds browser limits. See MDN’s toDataURL() reference.

Memory and maximum-size limits to consider

Increasing both bitmap dimensions by a device-pixel ratio increases the number of stored pixels approximately by the square of that ratio. A 2× ratio means roughly four times as many bitmap pixels as a 1× bitmap of the same CSS size. This is a pixel-count relationship, not a promise of a particular memory use: actual cost depends on the browser and pixel format, and additional copies may be involved during export.

Very large canvases can exceed browser limits. MDN identifies over-limit and zero-size cases as reasons toDataURL() can return data:,. If the target image does not need the full page or a very large ratio, reduce the bitmap size rather than repeatedly increasing DPR. For large exports, consider whether the output can be divided into smaller regions or generated at the dimensions the destination actually needs.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot of a webpage rather than a specific canvas bitmap, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call endpoint returns an image or PDF for a URL; it captures the page, not an arbitrary in-memory canvas object. For canvas work, use the browser sizing and export steps above so the source bitmap contains enough detail.

One GET request can return a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request details. Before a capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with verdict and billing information in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing canvas width and height erase what was drawn?

Yes. Setting either bitmap dimension resets the canvas drawing state and clears its contents. Set both dimensions before configuring the transform, then redraw the scene.

Should I use devicePixelRatio for every canvas?

Use it when the canvas should look sharp at the current display density and the added bitmap size is acceptable. A 1× backing store can be sufficient when the output is intentionally low-resolution or memory constraints matter.

Can a screenshot tool make a blurry canvas sharp?

Not if the page’s canvas bitmap lacks the detail: a screenshot can only capture what the browser renders. Fix the backing-store or export ratio at the source before capturing.
