If an HTML image is missing in Chrome, first check the live <img> element and the exact URL Chrome selected. Then inspect that image request in DevTools and use the browser’s error message to choose a fix. A wrong path, an empty source, a blocked host, an unsupported file, and an HTTPS security warning need different fixes; changing the tag at random can miss the cause.

Start with the image Chrome actually selected

The page source or template is not always the same as the DOM Chrome is displaying. Open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+J on Windows/Linux, or Option+Command+J on macOS, and select Elements. Find the missing image and inspect its live <img> attributes.

  • Confirm that src is present and nonempty, or that the element has a usable srcset.
  • Check the full selected URL, including filename, directory, capitalization, query string, and scheme. A relative URL is resolved against the page’s URL, not necessarily the folder you expect.
  • If the element uses srcset or appears inside <picture>, check which candidate Chrome selected. The browser may be requesting a different file than the plain src suggests.
  • Look for scripts or frameworks that may replace attributes after the initial HTML is parsed.

MDN lists empty or null sources, a source that resolves to the page itself, corrupted image data or metadata, and unsupported image formats among causes of image loading or rendering errors. See MDN’s <img> reference.

As a quick diagnostic, open the selected image URL in a new tab. If it does not display or download as the expected image, focus on that URL and its response before changing CSS or rewriting the whole element. A successful direct open does not rule out browser policy problems on the original page, so continue with the request inspection below.

Use DevTools to identify where the image fails

  1. Open Network. In Chrome DevTools, select the Network panel and reload the page. Select the Img filter so the request list is easier to read.
  2. Find the missing file. Compare each image request’s URL with the URL you saw in Elements. Inspect its status, response, and MIME type. A request that never reaches the intended file points toward a URL, redirect, connectivity, or server-response problem; a browser-reported policy block points toward a different branch.
  3. Read the browser diagnosis. Check Console and Issues for messages about CSP, CORS, or mixed content. Chrome’s Issues panel identifies detected problem types and links affected resources to relevant DevTools contexts: Chrome DevTools Issues.
  4. Make the smallest matching change. Correct the path if it targets the wrong file; address the response or file if the URL is right but the returned content is not a usable image; adjust a security policy only when the diagnostic identifies it.
  5. Reload and verify. Confirm that the request now succeeds and that the image appears at the intended size and location.

Network can filter by resource type and other request properties, including MIME type, scheme, and mixed-content status. The Chrome DevTools Network reference explains these filters and request details.

Fix the cause shown by the evidence

The URL is wrong, empty, or points to the page

Update the rendered source so it names the intended image. Check the actual deployed directory structure and filename rather than assuming the development machine’s paths match the server. Pay attention to case: a filename that appears equivalent on one system may not identify the same resource on another. If a script constructs the URL, inspect the final DOM value and correct the code that generated it.

Do not leave an empty src as a temporary placeholder. If an image is optional, render the <img> only when there is a valid URL, or use a deliberate fallback image. An empty or invalid source can cause the browser to request an unintended resource, including the page itself in some situations.

The server returns an error or something that is not an image

If the request row shows an error status or the response is not an image, the HTML element may be valid while the resource is not available as expected. Use the failed row’s URL and response details to investigate the specific host: the file may be missing, access may be denied, a redirect may lead somewhere unexpected, or the response may not contain image data. The evidence for a particular page has to come from its own request and server response; there is no universal status code or server fix for all missing images.

Correct the URL, permissions, or server behavior that the request actually reveals. If the response contains damaged image data or metadata, replace or re-encode the file. If Chrome cannot render the file’s format, provide a supported image format. Avoid changing CSS first when the Network panel shows that no usable image resource arrived.

A Content Security Policy blocks the image

If Console or Issues reports a Content Security Policy violation, inspect the policy delivered with the page. The img-src directive specifies permitted image sources. If img-src is absent, default-src can provide the fallback. Permit only the image origin the page is meant to use rather than broadly weakening the policy. See MDN’s img-src reference.

For example, if the intended images are hosted on a separate image domain, that origin may need to be allowed by the site’s policy. The appropriate policy depends on the page’s current directives and the actual image origin; do not copy a permissive policy without checking those details.

The request has a CORS problem

CORS is relevant when the image element uses the crossorigin attribute. That attribute makes the browser use a CORS request, and the remote server must grant the requesting origin access. If Chrome reports a CORS error, check whether the page needs crossorigin for its use of the image and whether the image server sends an appropriate CORS response.

  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Do not add or remove crossorigin as a blind fix. If the image is being used in a context that requires a CORS-enabled request, removing the attribute may not meet that requirement; the server configuration must permit the origin. MDN describes this behavior in its image element documentation.

An HTTPS page references an HTTP image

Use an HTTPS image URL when the image host supports it, then reload and inspect the warning. Chrome’s handling of mixed content depends in part on how the image is referenced: an HTTP src may be upgraded, while some srcset and <picture> cases can be blocked. Follow the specific Console or Issues diagnostic rather than assuming every HTTP image behaves identically. See MDN’s mixed-content guidance.

The file is corrupt, unsupported, or visually obscured

If the request succeeds but Chrome cannot decode the response, verify that the file is a valid image in a format the browser supports and that the server returned the intended file rather than an error page. Replace corrupt data or convert an unsupported format. If the request succeeds and the image itself loads but remains invisible, inspect the element’s CSS and layout separately: dimensions, visibility, opacity, stacking, and clipping can hide rendered content without preventing the network request.

Keep useful fallback text and stable layout

Give informative images meaningful alt text. MDN notes that this text can be displayed when an image cannot load, including because of network errors, content blocking, or link rot. Decorative images should use an empty alternative text value (alt="") so they do not add noise for assistive technology.

When the image’s intrinsic dimensions are known, set width and height on the element. This reserves space while the image loads and reduces layout movement; it does not repair a failed request. A basic pattern is:

<img src="/images/team-photo.webp" alt="The support team outside the office" width="1200" height="800">

Use a description that conveys the image’s relevant content, not a filename or a generic phrase such as “image.” For a missing image, the alternative text also helps the page remain understandable while the actual resource problem is being fixed.

Troubleshooting when the first fix does not work

What you see What to check next Action
No image request appears in Network The live DOM, lazy-loading behavior, and whether the element is actually rendered Confirm that the element has a usable source and that scripts or page state have not prevented it from being requested.
The request URL is not the file you expected srcset, sizes, <picture>, relative paths, and script-generated attributes Correct the selected candidate or the code that constructs the URL.
The request fails or returns unexpected content The failed row’s status, redirects, response, and MIME type Investigate the URL and the server response; replace the file if the data is damaged or not an image.
Console or Issues names CSP img-src and, if absent, default-src Permit the intended image origin without broadening unrelated permissions.
Console names CORS Whether the element uses crossorigin and what the image server allows Align the attribute and the server’s CORS response with the way the page uses the image.
Console names mixed content Whether the page is HTTPS and how the image URL is supplied Use HTTPS and verify that the browser warning disappears.
Request succeeds but nothing is visible Decode errors and the element’s CSS, dimensions, and layout Verify valid image data, then inspect whether styling hides or clips the rendered element.

Some problems—such as access permissions, hotlink protection, redirect rules, or response headers—can only be established from the particular failed request and server behavior. Treat them as possibilities to investigate, not conclusions based only on a broken-image icon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a CORS error mean every image needs CORS enabled?

No. In this diagnosis, CORS matters when the image element uses the crossorigin attribute; whether the server must grant access depends on how the page uses that image.

Why does an image work in a new tab but not on my page?

Opening the URL directly does not reproduce the original page’s Content Security Policy, CORS request mode, or mixed-content context. Inspect the request and the browser message from the page where it fails.

Is a broken-image icon proof that Chrome is broken?

No. It indicates that the image did not render, but the cause can be the source, response, file, or a browser security policy. DevTools distinguishes those cases.
