Hewlett Packard Enterprise removed a $700 million AI systems order from its books in Q4 FY2024 because it had concerns about a specific customer and judged the order too risky, CEO Antonio Neri said. He explicitly denied that the decision was due to a competitive loss. HPE did not identify the customer or explain the precise risk.

Why did HPE cancel the $700 million AI deal?

During HPE’s Q4 FY2024 earnings call, an analyst asked whether the order had been removed because HPE lost the business to a competitor, because it was a duplicate, or for another reason. Neri said HPE had booked $1.2 billion in new AI systems orders during the quarter, but de-booked the $700 million order because it had “concern with a specific customer.” He said the order carried significant risk and that removing it was prudent. Neri added: “It has nothing to do with competitive.” (HPE Q4 2024 earnings transcript, December 5, 2024.)

HPE’s explanation was about the customer and the risk attached to the order—not a disclosed technical issue with the AI systems. HPE separately told Network World it aimed to engage with sound customers, manage risk, and maintain a diversified order book. (Network World, December 9, 2024.)

Who was the customer, and what was the risk?

HPE did not name the customer in the earnings-call exchange, and contemporaneous reporting also described the customer as unnamed. The sources do not specify what concern HPE had. They do not establish that it involved creditworthiness, payment, contract performance, or any other particular issue, so attributing a specific cause would go beyond what HPE disclosed.

An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.

Was the order lost to a competitor?

No, according to Neri. The analyst raised competitive loss as one possible explanation, but the CEO directly rejected it. His remarks present the de-booking as HPE’s decision to avoid an order it considered too risky, rather than a deal another vendor won.

How do the $700 million order and HPE’s other figures fit together?

The figures describe different measures and points in time; they should not be treated as interchangeable. CFO Marie Myers said AI systems orders can be “lumpy.” Network World reported that she put the quarter’s net orders at approximately $500 million after the de-booking. HPE subsequently reported AI systems backlog above $3.5 billion.

$1.2 billion New AI systems orders HPE said it booked Q4 FY2024; Antonio Neri on HPE’s earnings call

What does the decision say about HPE’s approach to risk?

HPE characterized the move as prudent risk management. In its statement to Network World, the company said it had a strong controls environment and would remain vigilant about working with sound customers, managing risk, and keeping its order book diversified. That statement describes HPE’s general approach; it does not reveal the specific concern behind this order.

Network World also quoted Info-Tech Research Group practice lead John Annand discussing possible market implications. That is analyst interpretation, not an additional reason HPE gave for removing the order. The available accounts do not establish that GPU supply limits, an expected customer payment failure, or concerns about AI return on investment caused this particular decision.
