Helium can produce both red and blue spectral lines because its electrons can move between several quantized energy states. Each transition releases light at a particular wavelength, so a helium spectrum appears as a set of colored lines—not one single color.

What the colored dots in a helium spectrum mean

If “little dots” means the bright marks seen in a spectrum, each is a spectral line: light concentrated around a particular wavelength. A prism or diffraction grating separates the light by wavelength, making those lines visible at different positions and colors.

As NASA Science explains, “Every element has a unique set of absorption and emission lines, or spectral signature.” The arrangement of lines can therefore help identify helium, much as a distinctive pattern can identify other elements. NASA Science’s overview of spectral types describes this use of spectra.

Why helium emits more than one color

Electrons in a helium atom occupy quantized energy states rather than an uninterrupted range of energies. When an electron moves from a higher-energy state to a lower one, the atom can emit a photon whose energy equals the difference between those states. Because helium has multiple possible transitions, it can emit photons with different energies and wavelengths.

The photon’s wavelength determines its place in the visible spectrum. Shorter-wavelength blue light has higher frequency and more energy per photon than longer-wavelength red light. NASA’s classroom worksheet connects wavelength, frequency, and photon energy in its graphing-spectra exercise.

Visible helium lines and their approximate colors

NASA Imagine the Universe’s educational table lists these approximate visible helium wavelengths and colors. The values are rounded for classroom use, so they are useful for understanding the pattern rather than as precision line measurements. NASA’s worksheet solution also gives frequency and energy examples for two of the lines.

In that NASA table, the 469 nm example is listed at 6.40 × 1014 Hz and 4.24 × 10-19 J per photon; the 669 nm example is listed at 4.48 × 1014 Hz and 2.97 × 10-19 J per photon. The blue example’s higher frequency and energy illustrate why blue photons carry more energy than red photons.

Why precision references distinguish He I from He II

The classroom values are rounded and should not be treated as a precision atlas. For more exact line wavelengths, consult NIST’s Strong Lines of Helium, which tabulates wavelengths and identifies the emitting species. He I denotes neutral helium; He II denotes singly ionized helium. Those are different ionic states, so a precise comparison should not combine their lines as though they came from the same species.

The atomic basis for the spectrum is visible in NIST’s Energy Levels of Neutral Helium (He I), which lists configurations, term levels, and energies. Transitions between levels account for the discrete rather than continuous set of emitted wavelengths.
