The driver and browser may be out of alignment
ChromeDriver must be able to create a session with the browser it controls. The third-party wappdriver package documentation recommends matching Chrome and ChromeDriver versions. A troubleshooting note in the Publicis Sapient enable-a11y project describes session-creation failures when a driver does not support the browser version and directs users to Chrome for Testing. Those references support checking alignment; they do not show that a mismatch produces WhatsApp’s update text after a page loads.
Headless and visible sessions have different conditions
Headless mode can be run with different flags, window dimensions, sandbox settings, profile directories, proxy settings, and timing. A visible run may reuse a logged-in profile while a headless run starts empty and has to complete QR authentication. Network behavior, account state, extensions, and consent dialogs can also differ. A disciplined diagnostic sequence
- Save the exact message. Record the wording, the URL, and whether it appears before WhatsApp Web finishes loading, after the QR screen, or after the chat interface appears. Capture a screenshot and timestamp for each run.
- Identify the launched browser. Print the executable path you configured. If you left it unset, inspect the Selenium capabilities and the process command line in the environment where the job runs. Do not infer the path from the Chrome icon on your workstation.
- Record both versions. Obtain the launched Chrome/Chromium version and the ChromeDriver version from the same run. Include the operating system and container image or package source.
- Check compatibility. Compare the browser and driver versions using the driver release information appropriate to your installation. If Selenium cannot create a session, fix this compatibility problem first. If a session is created but WhatsApp later displays an update notice, keep those two observations separate.
- Repeat with a visible window. Keep the browser binary, driver, profile or fresh-profile choice, network, account, viewport, and wait timings the same. Change only headless versus visible mode where possible. Record the result rather than calling it a proven explanation.
- Apply WhatsApp’s general advice. Test the latest available browser build for your platform and verify DNS, proxy, firewall, and internet access. The help page does not promise that these steps resolve a Selenium-specific warning.
Print the actual browser and driver used by Selenium

Common failures and practical fixes
“SessionNotCreated” or an error saying the driver supports another browser version
This is a driver/browser compatibility failure before WhatsApp can load. Verify the executable path and versions, then install a compatible ChromeDriver or use a supported Selenium driver-management workflow. The GitHub troubleshooting note cited above discusses this class of error; it does not connect it to WhatsApp’s later update banner.
Selenium launches an unexpected Chromium build
An explicit binary_location, a container’s default browser, or PATH order can select a different binary than the one you updated. Print the path, inspect that executable’s version inside the same machine or container, and set the intended path explicitly.
The QR code appears every time
A new temporary profile has no WhatsApp Web session cookies. Decide whether your test should use a dedicated persistent profile or authenticate afresh. Never share a personal profile directory between concurrent jobs; profile locking and account-session interference can create misleading results.
The page is blank, stuck, or times out
Check outbound HTTPS access, proxy authentication, DNS, firewall rules, and the browser console. Increase waits only after confirming connectivity. A timeout is not evidence that Chrome needs an update.

The warning appears only after login
Record the exact navigation and account state. Test with a fresh profile and with a controlled authenticated profile, while keeping versions fixed. Do not assume the login transition proves headless detection or a user-agent check.
Updating Chrome did not remove the message
Confirm that Selenium is using the updated executable, not an older system or container copy. If the binary and driver are current and aligned and the message remains, the WhatsApp-side condition is still unknown from the public material cited here.
