Google discontinued Google Translate in mainland China in September 2022, saying the service had low usage. Censorship is part of Google’s history in China, but the available evidence does not show that censorship was the direct reason for this particular decision.

What happened to Google Translate in mainland China?

In late September 2022, users found that Google Translate’s mainland China address no longer opened the service as before. Contemporary reports described it as redirecting users toward the Hong Kong version, which was then inaccessible from mainland China. Google confirmed the discontinuation to TechCrunch on September 30, 2022, saying: “We have discontinued Google Translate in mainland China due to low usage.” TechCrunch’s report quotes a Google spokesperson; it does not name that spokesperson.

That is the clearest public explanation for the 2022 decision. It is not evidence that Google disclosed every consideration behind it, but it is more specific than attributing the move to censorship without a source.

Was censorship the reason?

The evidence supports a distinction between context and confirmed cause. Google has a documented history of conflict with Chinese authorities over censorship, but the sources available for the Translate shutdown do not establish censorship as its direct cause. Google’s reported explanation was low usage.

In March 2010, Google said it would stop censoring search results on Google.cn and redirect search users to Google.com.hk. In an official post, then-SVP of Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond wrote that “the Chinese government has been crystal clear throughout our discussions that self-censorship is a non-negotiable legal requirement.” Google’s 2010 statement describes a dispute over search, online speech, and cyberattacks. It provides important background, but it does not explain the later Translate decision.

How to interpret the reported usage figure

In October 2022, the South China Morning Post reported that Similarweb estimated 53.5 million desktop and mobile visits to the China site in August 2022. SCMP’s report attributes the figure to Similarweb.

This is an estimate of visits during one month, not a count of unique people. It also does not reveal what Google meant by “low usage,” how its internal usage measure was calculated, or how usage changed over time. The figure therefore does not contradict the company’s explanation on its own.

Can you use Google Translate in China now?

The historical reports say the mainland URL redirected toward the Hong Kong service and that the Hong Kong destination was inaccessible from mainland China at that time. A Google Translate Community product expert suggested the Hong Kong page in a 2022 support thread, but contemporaneous reporting said it could not be accessed from the mainland. The community thread is not a reliable confirmation of present-day access.

Current reachability has not been verified here. Internet access can change, so the 2022 reports should not be treated as a live test or as proof of whether the service works on a particular mainland network today.

What to take away

  • Google discontinued Translate in mainland China in 2022 and publicly cited low usage.
  • Google’s earlier censorship dispute concerned its search service; it is historical context, not proof of the Translate shutdown’s motive.
  • Reports of redirection and inaccessibility describe conditions in 2022, not verified current availability.
