SynthID checks for a specific watermark embedded in supported Google-generated content; it is not a universal AI detector. If a check reports no SynthID watermark, that means the watermark was not detected—not that the media was necessarily made by a person. The mark may never have been added, or a transformation may have weakened the signal.
What SynthID checks—and what a negative result means
SynthID embeds identifying signals in supported content during generation or publication. For images and video, the signal is embedded in pixels or frames; for audio, it is embedded in the generated sound. Text watermarking uses information introduced through token-choice probabilities. A detector looks for the relevant SynthID pattern; it does not determine whether any AI system was involved. Google DeepMind’s SynthID overview describes the supported content and tools.
Coverage depends on the model, product, and workflow. Google describes particular systems and services—not a commitment that every AI-generated file carries SynthID. The original image announcement covered Imagen, while Google’s video announcement covered Veo. Media made with another provider, an unsupported model, or an unmarked workflow may have no SynthID to find.
For images, Google’s original announcement describes three outcomes: watermark detected (likely generated by Imagen), watermark possibly detected (treat with caution), and not detected (unlikely generated by Imagen). These are likelihood assessments tied to Imagen, not proof that no other AI made the image. Interpret the wording in the actual tool you used, since product interfaces and supported file details can change.

Why SynthID may return no detection
The content was never watermarked with SynthID
A SynthID detector cannot find a mark that was not inserted. An AI-generated image, video, audio clip, or text passage from an unsupported model may therefore return no detection. Even when the source is a Google product, check whether that specific product and content type are documented as using SynthID rather than assuming coverage across all Google AI output.
Text has too little watermark signal
Google says text watermarking works best on longer responses generated in varied ways. It is less effective for factual prompts and outputs with little expected variation: there may be fewer opportunities to adjust token choices without affecting accuracy. Thorough rewriting or translation can greatly reduce detection confidence; mild paraphrasing and small edits may be tolerated. These are differences in effectiveness, not guarantees that a short answer will evade detection or that any rewrite removes a watermark. Google DeepMind’s explanation of text and video watermarking describes these limitations.

Editing went beyond what the watermark can withstand
Google says its image watermark is designed to withstand common changes such as filters, color and brightness adjustments, and lossy compression. It also cautions that extreme manipulation can defeat detection. Robustness to common edits is not a promise of detection after arbitrary editing. Google does not publish a threshold that predicts when cropping, resizing, compositing, or another specific transformation will cause a missed detection. Google DeepMind’s image announcement discusses both the intended resilience and this caveat.
For audio, Google says SynthID in Lyria music outputs is expected to remain detectable after common modifications such as added noise, MP3 compression, and speed changes. Its current overview also identifies Lyria and NotebookLM podcast generation. Those statements should not be generalized to every audio model or every processing method. Google DeepMind’s Lyria announcement describes the audio watermarking claim.

The result is specific to a modality and detection method
Image, text, audio, and video watermarking do not have one shared accuracy guarantee. Google’s text discussion explains how confidence can change with prompt type and rewriting; its image announcement gives Imagen-specific likelihood categories. Google has not published a universal SynthID accuracy percentage, false-negative rate, or cross-modal threshold in these announcements, so a single number would be misleading.
How to check content and interpret the result
- Identify the source if possible. Find out which model or product created the file and whether Google documents SynthID for that system and modality.
- Use a supported check. Google’s current overview describes asking Gemini about uploaded images, videos, or audio, and a separate SynthID Detector portal for uploads. Portal access and supported file details may change; check the current product information before relying on a particular upload workflow.
- Record the exact result wording. A detected or possible watermark is evidence about SynthID, with the confidence or likelihood indicated by the tool. A no-detection result only says the mark was not found by that check.
- Consider the file’s history. Note editing, compression, translation, rewriting, or other transformations that could affect the watermark signal, especially for text or heavily manipulated images.
- Corroborate separately. Check available metadata, provenance records, and the source context. Google says pixel-embedded SynthID is compatible with metadata-based identification, but metadata can be removed or lost during editing. Google’s image announcement discusses the relationship between these methods.
Why a SynthID result cannot settle authenticity
A positive result supports the conclusion that the relevant SynthID watermark is present; it does not, by itself, establish every detail of how a file was created or whether it has been altered. A negative result is even narrower: the check did not detect that watermark. It cannot establish that content is human-made.

Other identification methods answer different questions. A general AI classifier infers whether content may have been generated by AI; SynthID checks for a particular embedded mark. Google has cautioned that text-detection tools can be unreliable, and its policy statement acknowledges that watermarking can be manipulated or circumvented by adversarial actors. Google DeepMind describes SynthID as “not a silver bullet” but a building block for more reliable AI identification. Use a result alongside independent provenance and context rather than treating it as a verdict. Google DeepMind’s safety statement addresses watermark limitations.
