Google announced on April 15, 2025, that it would gradually redirect people from country-specific Search domains—such as google.ng and google.com.br—to google.com. The change is to the address-bar hostname, not a stated change to how Search localizes results: Google says users will continue to receive a country service based on location or their Search settings.
What is changing—and what is not
Google’s April 15, 2025 announcement says it will gradually redirect traffic from country-code Google Search domains to google.com. Google linked the change to its 2017 move to provide the same local-results experience on google.com and country-specific domains; in its account, a country-specific hostname is no longer needed to provide local results. Google’s announcement
The visible change is the hostname in the browser address bar. Google said Search would work the same way and that the change would not alter how it handles obligations under national laws. The announcement said rollout would happen “over the coming months,” but did not give a final completion date or list every domain affected.
Why Google is making the change
Google says the role of country-specific Search domains has changed since 2017. Its earlier explanation said that, by default, users are served the country service corresponding to their location, rather than having the hostname determine that service. That means google.com can provide localized Search without a local country-code domain. Google’s 2017 explanation

Will local results stop appearing?
Google’s announcement says the hostname change will not affect how Search works. Its 2017 guidance explains that location determines the country service users receive by default, and that users can select a different country service in Search settings. Google also says the active country service is shown at the bottom of the results page. Settings labels and page layouts can change, so treat those details as Google’s documented guidance rather than a guarantee that every current interface is identical.
During the rollout, Google warned that some users might be asked to re-enter Search preferences. If results or preferences seem different after a redirect, review Search settings and confirm the country service shown on the results page.

Does google.ca, google.co.uk, or another local domain still work?
Google’s plan is to redirect country-specific Search domains to google.com, but its public announcement does not confirm that every redirect is complete or identify all remaining exceptions. It names examples such as google.ng and google.com.br; it does not provide a final worldwide inventory. So a move to google.com is consistent with the announced change, but the 2025 announcement alone cannot establish the current status of every local domain.
How to choose a different Google Search country service
- Open Google Search settings. Google’s 2017 guidance describes selecting the country service there; the exact current label or layout may differ.
- Choose the country service that matches the results you want to receive.
- Run a search and check the bottom of the results page for the active country service, as described in Google’s guidance.
A country service is not the same thing as the hostname in the address bar. Reaching google.com does not, by itself, establish that Search has switched to a different country service.

What website owners and international SEO teams should know
This is a change to Google’s own Search domains, not a recommendation for site owners to abandon country-code domains or change their URL strategy. Google’s international-site guidance addresses language-specific URLs and hreflang annotations, canonicalization for similar regional pages, and country targeting. Choose a regional URL structure based on the site’s audiences, languages, and targeting needs rather than assuming Google’s hostname decision applies to your site. What remains unconfirmed
Google’s April 15, 2025 announcement describes a gradual rollout but does not publish an exact schedule, a country-by-country list, or a final completion report. It therefore does not establish whether every country-specific Search domain has now redirected or whether exceptions remain.
