Google Maps can suggest different routes to different people because their directions may use different road preferences, fuel-efficient routing choices, or vehicle assumptions. Even with matching settings, recommendations can differ as traffic and road conditions change. The three settings below are useful explanations, not a Google-defined list of every reason routes vary.

Why Google Maps gives people different routes

Maps does not simply choose one route for everyone. A route may be shaped by the roads a person wants to avoid, whether efficiency is prioritized, and—when efficiency estimates are in use—the vehicle type selected. Google also says recommendations may vary with real-time traffic and road conditions. Google’s directions help page explains route options and alternatives; its eco-friendly routing help describes efficiency settings and estimates.

1. Avoid tolls, highways, or ferries

If one driver asks Maps to avoid toll roads while another does not, they are asking for routes under different constraints. The same principle applies to highways, and ferries where that option is available. A preference can influence route selection, but Google’s help does not guarantee that every requested avoidance can be honored on every trip.

Desktop directions

  1. Enter an origin and destination in Google Maps and request directions.
  2. Open Options, then select Tolls or Highways to avoid those road types.
  3. Review the routes shown on the map and select an alternative if one better fits your needs.

The controls can differ by device and version. Google’s Maps Go guidance, for example, describes route options for avoiding ferries, tolls, and highways; do not assume the desktop controls or steps match the main Android or iOS apps. Google Maps Go help also notes that navigation may not be available everywhere.

  • Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
  • Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
  • View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
  • View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
  • Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks

2. Prefer fuel-efficient routes

Where the feature is available, eco-friendly routing weighs estimated fuel or energy efficiency alongside real-time traffic, route simplicity, and road conditions. If there is more than one route, Maps may show the fastest route and the most efficient route. Turning the preference off means efficiency is not used for the main recommendation in the same way, though Maps may still mark an efficient alternative. Availability is limited to selected countries and regions.

iPhone and iPad setting

Google documents this path for iPhone and iPad: tap your profile picture or initial → Settings → Navigation → Route options → turn on Prefer fuel-efficient routes. Its help page also describes changing the preference after directions are loaded. Labels and paths may differ on other platforms, so check the current app interface rather than applying these iOS steps elsewhere.

3. Choose the vehicle’s engine type

Google says the estimated most efficient route can vary by engine type. Its documented choices include gas or petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric, with some regional naming differences and compatible plug information for applicable vehicles. If you have not chosen an engine type, Maps uses gas or petrol as the default in most countries and regions. Google says motorcycles are currently assumed to use gas or petrol for these calculations.

Google’s general examples illustrate why the assumptions matter: diesel vehicles’ relative fuel-economy advantage is generally greatest on highways, while hybrids and electric vehicles tend to be more efficient in stop-and-go city traffic and on hills, where regenerative braking can help. These are broad tendencies, not a prediction for every vehicle or journey.

For electric vehicles, Google’s limitation is explicit: “Energy-efficient routes for EVs don’t include stops to charge.” Check charging availability separately rather than treating an efficient route as a charging plan.

What goes into Google’s efficiency estimates

Google says its calculations draw on insights from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the European Environment Agency. The factors it identifies include average vehicle fuel or energy consumption in a region, hill steepness, stop-and-go traffic patterns, and road type, such as local roads or highways. The help documentation does not provide a numerical accuracy guarantee.

Google says it recommends the efficient route when its arrival time is roughly the same as the fastest route. If savings are small or driving time rises significantly, Maps presents relative savings so drivers can compare. The documentation does not publish a general savings figure that applies to every trip.
