Google and Bing say they can remove some links from search results; that does not necessarily remove the images from the websites hosting them. If you are depicted, report the material to the search engine and the hosting site separately.
What the 2024 investigation found—and what it did not
In a January 11, 2024 report, Ars Technica relayed NBC News’ audit of searches for 36 female celebrities. With SafeSearch turned off, investigators paired the names with explicit terms such as “deepfakes,” “deepfake porn” and “fake nudes.” They found links to deepfake videos among top results 35 times on Bing and 34 times on Google across those searches. The report also described results involving images of former teen actors that appeared underage.
Those counts apply to that set of names, queries and search conditions. They are not percentages, a count of unique videos, a measure of all search traffic, or evidence of current rankings. The audit predates Google’s July 2024 changes, and it does not establish what a particular person will see today.
Why can a search engine show nonconsensual deepfakes?
A search engine indexes pages hosted elsewhere and ranks them in response to queries. If a page is indexed and the engine has not removed or demoted it, a search can surface a link to it. That can happen even though the person depicted did not consent to the image or its distribution. The search result and the underlying page are separate: changing one does not automatically change the other.

Google describes several ways it tries to reduce unexpected exposure to explicit content, including SafeSearch filters and systems that consider query intent and ranking. It also says it can remove certain explicit personal imagery from Search after a request. These are Google’s descriptions of its policies and systems, not an independent finding that every case is handled consistently.
What Google and Bing say they can remove
| Question | Google Search | Bing |
|---|---|---|
| Does the policy cover fake or AI-generated imagery? | Google’s reporting form covers content that falsely portrays a person nude or in an intimate state. It says AI-generated deepfakes can be nonconsensual intimate imagery (NCII) abuse when created or distributed without consent. (Google reporting form) | Microsoft says Bing may remove links to nonconsensual sexually explicit imagery, including deepfakes. (Microsoft Bing policy) |
| What search-level action is described? | Google says it may remove a reported result. After a successful removal request, its systems aim to find duplicate images and filter explicit results on similar searches about the affected person. (Google, July 31, 2024) | Bing may remove a link from its search results. The policy does not describe a comparable duplicate-scanning or similar-search process. (Microsoft Bing policy) |
| Does delisting delete the content at its source? | Google Search removal changes what is available through Search; it does not by itself remove the material from the site hosting it. (Google Search policy; Microsoft Bing policy describes the distinction explicitly for Bing.) | No. Microsoft warns that the content may remain on the original website unless the site owner removes it. (Microsoft Bing policy) |
| Is success guaranteed or is a timeline stated? | Google’s form says it has no legal obligation to act on a request. The reviewed Google materials do not state a guaranteed outcome or removal timeline. (Google reporting form) | Microsoft says removal is limited. The reviewed Bing policy does not state a guaranteed outcome or removal timeline. (Microsoft Bing policy) |
| Is there an independently measured, comparable success rate? | Not stated for Google in the reviewed sources. | Not stated for Bing in the reviewed sources. |
Google product manager Emma Higham wrote on July 31, 2024: “When someone successfully requests the removal of explicit non-consensual fake content featuring them from Search, Google’s systems will also aim to filter all explicit results on similar searches about them.” The wording describes Google’s aim after a successful request, not a promise that every duplicate or related result will disappear.

Why is Google showing deepfake porn in search results?
A result can appear if a search engine has indexed the page and its systems have not filtered, demoted or removed that result for the query. Ranking and filtering are not the same as verification that the depicted person consented. Google says it has changed ranking for queries it considers at higher risk of explicit fake content and aims to surface high-quality, non-explicit results for searches seeking content with a person’s name when available.
Google reported that changes made in 2024 reduced exposure to explicit image results by over 70% for the types of queries discussed in its July 31 announcement. That is Google’s self-reported figure for the scope it described—not an independently audited measure, a result for every kind of search, or a guarantee that such content no longer appears.

How to seek removal from Google or Bing
If the material depicts you, use the official reporting route for the search engine that displays the link. Do not repost or send explicit imagery to make a report. Google’s form may ask you to identify the content and say whether it falsely depicts you as nude or in a sexual situation.
- Record the search result without spreading the image. Note the search engine, the result’s page address and the query that surfaced it. Avoid downloading, forwarding or publishing the explicit material.
- Submit a request to the search engine. Use Google’s current reporting form for explicit personal imagery or Bing’s reporting process for nonconsensual intimate imagery. Describe that the content is fake or AI-generated if that applies, and provide the requested identifying details.
- Report the source page to the hosting site. Search delisting and removal by the original site are separate actions. Contact the site through its official abuse or privacy reporting channel where available.
- Keep a private record of your reports. Save confirmation details and any replies so you can follow up without circulating the imagery.
- Consider local support if legal action is relevant. Rules and available remedies vary by location; consult an appropriate local official resource or qualified adviser rather than assuming a single deadline or process applies everywhere.
What to expect after reporting
A search engine may remove a qualifying link, but neither policy guarantees that a request will succeed or specifies a universal timeline. A link disappearing from search does not prove the source page or copies elsewhere have been deleted. If the content remains on its host, the separate report to that site is still important.

Reporting routes may also perform differently from one another. A September 2024 study by Li Qiwei and colleagues tested two reporting mechanisms on X using 50 AI-generated nude images: all 25 reports submitted as copyright claims led to removal within 25 hours, while none of the 25 reports through X’s nonconsensual-nudity mechanism led to removal during the study’s three-week observation period. This small study concerns X’s tested pathways only; it does not measure Google or Bing and should not be used to predict their outcomes.

Google’s July 2024 announcement described easier reporting, scanning for duplicate images after a successful removal, filtering explicit results on similar searches about a person, and ranking changes intended to lower explicit fake content. Google’s Search Central documentation also describes removal and demotion policies. These statements explain what Google says its systems are designed to do; they do not establish how reliably a result will be handled in an individual case.

On August 22, 2025, state attorneys general wrote to Google, Microsoft and Yahoo asking how the companies deprioritize, restrict or block deepfake NCII and its creation tools, and requesting commitments to do more. The letter is evidence of public pressure and a request for information and action—not proof that the companies complied or changed their systems.
What remains uncertain
The available evidence does not establish a current, comparable rate for how often Google and Bing show deepfake NCII across countries, languages, query types and users. The 2024 NBC audit is historical; Google’s later reduction figure is self-reported and scoped to its announcement. Nor do the cited platform policies establish a universal removal outcome, timeline or legal remedy.
