Google says ads may appear in AI Mode when they are relevant to a search, and its announced AI Mode ad formats are labeled “Sponsored.” The formats were described as tests in Google’s May 20, 2026 announcement, so not every AI Mode response contains an ad and their availability is not established for every user or location.
Why ads appear in Google AI Mode
Google’s stated purpose for Search ads is to connect people with businesses offering products and services they may be looking for. Google says it displays ads only when it believes they are relevant to the search terms entered, and that most searches show no ads. These are Google’s descriptions of its own system, not an independent audit. Google’s Search explainer also says advertisers cannot buy better placement in organic Search results: ads occupy eligible, marked sections.
In its May 20, 2026 announcement, Google said it was testing ad formats designed for AI Mode responses. Google describes these formats as built with Gemini and says they will include relevant product details and helpful guidance. That describes Google’s announced design; it does not mean an AI-generated answer independently recommends or endorses an advertiser. Google’s announcement of AI Mode ad formats does not establish how often an ad will appear or a complete set of eligibility and targeting rules.

The first two formats were described as tests in Google’s May 20, 2026 announcement. The announcement does not establish their current country-by-country rollout, availability by device or audience, or one fixed label position across screens and versions. The “Sponsored results” heading is a separate Search treatment: Google announced it on October 13, 2025, saying it was rolling out globally on desktop and mobile at that time. Google also says Shopping ads use the label “Sponsored products.” Google’s announcement about the Search “Sponsored results” heading should not be read as proof that every ad near an AI answer uses that same label or layout.

Look for the “Sponsored” disclosure on the announced AI Mode ad formats. Do not rely on a particular position on the screen: Google has not specified one fixed location for the label across devices or versions. In ordinary Search, Google says ads are labeled “Sponsored” or “Ad” and displayed separately from organic results. Google’s explanation of how Search works supports the practical distinction: a paid placement is not an organic Search ranking.
A “Sponsored results” heading identifies a grouped set of text ads in Search; it is distinct from the “Sponsored” label Google announced for the AI Mode formats. A “Sponsored products” label identifies Shopping ads. Check the actual disclosure rather than assuming that an item is organic because it appears within, or near, an AI-generated response.
What you can control
Google says My Ad Center lets people see information used for ads across Search, YouTube and Discover and manage that information. Google’s general information about ads and privacy says ads may be based on activity or may help users discover something new. Those are broad ad controls and explanations; the cited pages do not document a specific AI Mode setting that guarantees ads will be removed.
What Google’s AI Mode survey figure does—and does not—show
Google’s 2026 announcement says 75% of people report making faster, more confident decisions using AI Mode in Search. Google attributes that result to its commissioned Ipsos Global Consumer Journeys research, an online survey conducted in December 2025 of 13,189 online shoppers in selected countries. Google says the online sample was not weighted to reflect population size. This is a survey result cited by Google; it does not show that AI Mode ads caused better decisions or provide an independently verified estimate for the broader population. Google’s announcement provides the figure and its stated context.
