In exchange for access, viewers give up some time and attention to commercial breaks. How those breaks work—and whether a service also offers paid content—depends on the platform and the specific title or channel.
How advertising makes free streaming possible
Ad-supported services earn money by showing advertising around their programming. Tubi describes the arrangement plainly: “We stay free by showing short ad breaks during our movies and TV shows.” The company says those ads help pay for content provided by studio and independent partners, including MGM, Lionsgate, and Paramount. Tubi Help Center: Is Tubi really free and legal?
Advertising is not necessarily a service’s only revenue source. Roku’s 2025 Form 10-K describes ad-supported video and free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) as distribution models, and digital advertising as a source of platform revenue. The same filing describes paid subscription options alongside free programming on The Roku Channel. Roku, Inc. 2025 Form 10-K
AVOD, FAST, and subscription plans with ads
“Free streaming” can describe more than one viewing format. The key distinction is whether you choose a title from a library or tune in to a scheduled channel—and whether the content itself is free or part of a paid plan.

| Format | How it works | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| AVOD (ad-supported video on demand) | You choose a movie or show from an on-demand library. | The selected title plays with advertising. Roku describes its AVOD library as free movies and shows. Roku, Inc. 2025 Form 10-K |
| FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) | You watch a scheduled, channel-like stream rather than choosing each program’s start time. | ACMA defines a FAST channel as “a grouping of programs that is shown on a set timetable.” Amazon Ads describes these as always-on channels designed to resemble cable. ACMA, Trends and developments in viewing and listening 2023–24 Amazon Ads: FAST channels |
| Paid subscription with ads | You pay for a subscription, but the plan may still include advertising. | This is not free streaming: the viewer pays a subscription even though ads may appear. Roku’s service taxonomy distinguishes subscription services from AVOD and FAST. Roku, Inc. 2025 Form 10-K |
Some apps combine these formats. The Roku Channel includes on-demand AVOD titles, live FAST channels, and premium subscription options. Prime Video also combines paid Prime programming with free, ad-supported programming. Check the label and price shown for the specific title or channel before pressing play; being inside an app does not mean every item has the same terms.
What to expect from ad breaks
Ads are part of the free-content trade
For an ad-supported title, expect commercial interruptions as part of the viewing experience. Tubi says it has no ad-free option, according to its Help Center’s current wording. That describes Tubi, not every free streaming service; policies and plan options differ by platform.

There is no dependable universal ad schedule
The reviewed service information does not establish a comparable number of ad minutes per hour or a fixed break count across platforms and titles. Tubi claims its ad minutes per hour are substantially lower than traditional broadcast or cable, but its cited Help Center page does not provide a numerical comparison. Treat any advertised or observed cadence as specific to the service, title, market, and time—not as a rule for free streaming generally.
Catalogs can change
Free services license content from studios and other partners, so a title’s availability can vary by country and change over time. A movie or show appearing in a catalog today is not a promise that it will remain there. Search the service’s current library when deciding whether it has the program you want.

Examples of services and how their offerings differ
The Roku Channel
Roku’s 2025 Form 10-K reported more than 80,000 movies and TV shows and more than 500 FAST channels for The Roku Channel. These are counts reported in that filing, not independently verified current totals. The filing said the service was available on Roku TV OS devices in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Mexico. In the United States, Roku also listed access through its mobile app and web, Amazon Fire TVs, Samsung TVs, Google TV, and other Android TV OS devices. Catalog counts and supported-device details can change. Roku, Inc. 2025 Form 10-K
Prime Video and Freevee programming
Amazon Ads says that after Freevee was deprecated in early 2025, its free movies, shows, and FAST channels were incorporated into Prime Video and remained available with ads without requiring Prime. The name and availability of free programming can differ by market, so check the current local app listing and the terms shown for a title. Amazon Ads: FAST channels

Pluto TV and regional access
Availability can depend on how a service is distributed in a particular country. In Australia, ACMA reports that Pluto TV is available exclusively through 10Play. The example illustrates why a service’s name alone does not tell you whether its standalone app is available where you live. ACMA, Trends and developments in viewing and listening 2023–24
How to choose a free service for what you want to watch
- Choose the viewing format. For a particular movie or show, look for an AVOD library. For something to watch like a live channel, look for FAST programming. Some apps offer both.
- Check whether the specific item is free. A service may put free ad-supported titles beside paid subscriptions or other paid content. Read the label and price for the title or channel you selected.
- Search for the program or genre. Libraries vary by service and location, and licensed titles may leave. Confirm that the content is currently listed in your region.
- Review the ad policy for that service. Check whether the service offers an ad-free plan or other ad controls. Do not assume a fixed number of breaks based on another platform’s experience.
- Confirm local access and device support. Check the service’s current country and supported-device pages. You may be able to use a compatible smart TV, phone, web browser, or streaming media player; an additional device is not inherently required.
What the audience figures do—and do not—show
FAST viewing has attracted substantial reported audiences, but the available figures are tied to particular surveys, regions, and measures:
