FFmpeg usually stops after one podcast episode because it has reached the end of the file—or of a finite episode list. YouTube Live does not make FFmpeg replay its input. To repeat a single episode or an ordered concat playlist indefinitely, put -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i. That is the leading explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis: the command, playlist, logs and YouTube stream-health report are needed to identify a particular failure.
Find out where playback stops
First determine whether FFmpeg finished reading its input, failed while moving between files, or continued running while YouTube had an ingest problem. Those are different failures and call for different fixes.
- Show FFmpeg’s output. Run the same command with ordinary log output visible. Temporarily remove
-loglevel quietor shell redirection. Note the last input opened, the final error or warning, and the process exit code. The CLI’s-xerroroption can make FFmpeg stop on errors, so check whether it or other error-related options are in use. - If the next episode never opens, inspect the playlist passed to FFmpeg: its order, filenames, paths, quoting, working directory and file permissions.
- If episodes open in order but the stream ends at an episode boundary, check whether the playlist input is finite and whether an input loop is configured.
- If FFmpeg opens the next episode but glitches, skips or errors, check stream compatibility and timestamps at that boundary.
- If FFmpeg is still running while YouTube reports a problem, compare the time of the issue with the timestamped errors and health indicator in YouTube Live Control Room.
A public live page that stops updating does not, by itself, prove FFmpeg exited. Check the process and YouTube’s health status separately.
Loop one podcast episode
For a single file intended to repeat, the essential structure is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i episode.mp4 [encoding and output options] "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_URL"-stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping of the input that follows it, so it belongs before that input’s -i. Placed after -i, it does not apply to the input already opened.
-re reads a file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1) and is often useful to pace file packets for live output. Do not apply read-rate limiting indiscriminately to a genuine capture device or live input: FFmpeg warns that a low read rate there may cause packet loss.
Loop an ordered list of episodes
Make a concat-demuxer manifest
For several episodes, create a text manifest in the intended playback order. For example:

The list is finite unless you loop it. -stream_loop -1 before -i episodes.ffconcat repeats the ordered sequence rather than just one episode.
Check compatibility before going live
Concat demuxing does not make incompatible media files compatible. The files need matching streams, including codecs and time bases. Differences in stream duration can create gaps because concat adjusts timestamps globally; inaccurate duration metadata can also cause artifacts. Test transitions locally and review FFmpeg’s logs before broadcasting.

If the files need conversion, the concat filter is an option for workflows that re-encode. It has its own stream-parameter and timestamp requirements, so normalize incompatible inputs deliberately rather than assuming the filter will resolve every mismatch.
The commands here show input-loop structure, not a tested recipe for an unseen playlist. Choose output codec, stream mapping, resolution, bitrate and ingest endpoint for the media and the settings shown in your YouTube channel setup. Keep your stream key private; use the current ingest details supplied by YouTube.

Do not confuse end of file with a connection failure
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes HTTP input reconnect options. reconnect concerns a disconnection before end of file; reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error for reconnect purposes and is described as useful for live or endless streams. Neither option turns a local episode file or finite concat list into a repeating playlist.

A local input reaching its last packet is an input-completion issue. A failed RTMP/RTMPS output connection is an output problem. Use the log and YouTube’s health messages to distinguish them before changing reconnect flags.

YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its Live error guidance also covers codec, bitrate, stream count, audio channels, frame rate and keyframe-frequency errors.
The general codec warning on YouTube’s error page says H.264 video and AAC audio, while its encoder-settings table lists additional options. Follow the current settings applicable to your ingest mode and the specific error displayed in Studio; do not assume the broad warning describes every supported configuration.

A definitive diagnosis requires the complete FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, the playlist, stream summaries for the episodes, output from startup through exit, the exit status, any supervising script or service behavior, and YouTube’s health messages from the same time.
