FFmpeg’s “Broken pipe” message means it tried to write to an endpoint that had stopped accepting data; it does not identify why that endpoint closed. On a “YouTube radio stream,” FFmpeg might be reading a YouTube source, publishing to YouTube Live, or passing data through a shell pipe. The command and surrounding log determine which direction failed—and which fix makes sense.

What “Broken pipe” means

FFmpeg’s error source maps EPIPE to the text “Broken pipe.” It describes a failed write, not a complete diagnosis of what closed the connection. The endpoint could be a shell-pipeline consumer, a remote HTTP or RTMP destination, or a server that ended a session. The same message can therefore have different causes in different commands.

First establish whether FFmpeg is pulling a stream from YouTube, pushing a stream to YouTube Live, or writing to a program or destination as part of a pipeline. YouTube’s encoder recommendations apply to sending a stream to YouTube Live; they do not automatically apply when FFmpeg is reading a YouTube source.

Find which process and endpoint failed

  1. Capture the whole command and logs. Keep stderr from every program involved, timestamps, and each process’s exit status. In producer | ffmpeg ..., either side may stop; a downloader’s BrokenPipeError is not the same as FFmpeg reporting a failed write to its output.
  2. Read the lines just before the error. Identify the named operation or destination: standard output, a local file, an HTTP source, an RTMP URL, or another endpoint. Record whether the error happens immediately, after the stream has run successfully, or at end of input.
  3. Determine the stream direction. Is FFmpeg opening a YouTube URL as input, sending to a YouTube Live ingest URL, or handing bytes to another process? Do not apply publishing settings or output recovery options until you know which side is failing.

The exact cause cannot be established from the error text alone. A useful diagnosis needs the complete command, full log, FFmpeg version/build, operating system, and stream direction.

Isolate input, processing, and output

Test one part of the path at a time. This narrows the fault without assuming that the YouTube source, encoding, or destination is responsible.

  1. Test the input by itself. If FFmpeg is reading a YouTube stream, check whether it can open and read that source independently.
  2. Write a short sample to a local file. If the input works, try a brief local output. If that fails too, investigate input handling or processing before focusing on a remote server.
  3. Test the destination with a known-good local file. If local output works but sending that file to the remote destination fails, focus on the output connection, ingest settings, or server behavior.
  4. For a shell pipeline, check both sides. Preserve each process’s stderr and exit status. A consumer that exits early can close the pipe while its producer is still writing.

Testing local output and then a known-good local file against an RTMP destination is a practical isolation pattern also suggested in a 2019 FFmpeg-user discussion about a related pipe workflow. It is not a guaranteed fix, and the exact commands depend on your setup.

Choose recovery options for the failing side

HTTP input reconnects

If the failing side is an HTTP input that disconnects, consult the HTTP protocol options in the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build. FFmpeg’s online HTTP documentation describes reconnect for disconnections before EOF, reconnect_at_eof for treating EOF as an error on live or endless streams, and options to reconnect on network errors or selected HTTP errors, with retry limits.

These are input-side options. Use them only when the input protocol and observed failure fit; they will not fix a failed RTMP output write.

It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

Output recovery with the FIFO muxer

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can separate encoding from muxing and attempt recovery when an output encounters a temporary problem. Its documented controls include recovery attempts, retry timing, and queue behavior. If the queue overflows, drop_pkts_on_overflow can let processing continue by omitting packets. That trades completeness for continuity; recovery does not prove the underlying endpoint problem is solved.

The suitable muxer, codecs, output protocol, and acceptable packet loss depend on the actual command. Do not treat a copied FIFO option block as a universal cure.

If FFmpeg is publishing to YouTube Live

First confirm that YouTube Live is the output destination. YouTube’s official live encoder settings are compatibility checks for publishing, not a diagnosis for every broken pipe. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, recommends RTMPS, specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Compare your outgoing stream with the official settings and the diagnostics in YouTube Live Control Room.

A mismatch may be worth correcting, but it does not by itself explain why a particular endpoint stopped accepting data. If FFmpeg is reading a YouTube source rather than publishing to YouTube Live, these ingest recommendations are not the relevant test.

Common symptoms and next checks

What you observe What it points to Next check
The error names a shell pipe or standard output A pipeline endpoint may have closed; either process may be responsible. Capture stderr and exit status for both processes; check whether the consumer exited first.
FFmpeg reports a failed HTTP input write/read path after a disconnect The source connection may have ended or encountered a network/HTTP error. Confirm the input protocol and failure timing; check whether the matching HTTP reconnect option applies.
Local-file output succeeds, but sending to a remote destination fails The remote output path is isolated as a likely fault area. Check destination availability and, if publishing to YouTube Live, compare ingest compatibility and Control Room diagnostics.
The failure happens only after a period of streaming A connection may be dropping mid-stream, though the timing alone does not establish the cause. Use timestamps and surrounding log lines to identify the endpoint and whether an input or output recovery strategy fits.
The error occurs at end of input The session may be ending normally or an endpoint may close before FFmpeg finishes writing. Check which process ended first and whether the destination accepted the final output.

Keep a YouTube stream running without a home computer

If your goal is to keep uploaded, prerecorded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, a separate cloud service can avoid leaving a computer and home connection running. StreamNeo is one such option: it streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not live camera footage or other platforms.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI is available in India, alongside cards; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo plans or start the free first day.

For additional planning, StreamNeo provides an upload-time calculator, a cloud vs. PC cost calculator, and a copyright safety checklist.
