El Niño shifts warm water, rising air and tropical rainfall across the Pacific, changing atmospheric circulation far beyond it. Those changes can raise the odds of wet conditions in one region and dry conditions in another—but they are seasonal tendencies, not guarantees for a particular town or storm.

Why can El Niño make one region wetter and another drier?

El Niño is the warm phase of ENSO, a coupled ocean–atmosphere pattern in the tropical Pacific. Under typical conditions, easterly trade winds push warm surface water westward. During El Niño, central and eastern tropical Pacific waters become unusually warm, the trade winds weaken, and the main area of rising moist air and tropical rainfall shifts east.

That shift changes tropical heating and the wider circulation of the atmosphere. The resulting teleconnections—links between conditions in one part of the climate system and weather patterns far away—can alter jet streams and storm tracks. Regions sit in different parts of those patterns, so rainfall and temperature tendencies can contrast. NOAA’s explainer cautions: “Such teleconnections are likely during El Niño events, but not certain.” NOAA’s El Niño and ENSO explainer

ENSO is not a global wet-or-dry switch. The outcome depends on the event’s strength and location, the season, local geography and other climate influences. NOAA’s ENSO FAQ notes that effects are not consistent every year and are best understood as shifts in probabilities, not certainties. NOAA Climate Prediction Center ENSO FAQ

What are common regional effects?

These examples describe broad tendencies. They do not predict conditions for every country, state or locality, and the variable matters: rainfall, temperature and storm odds do not respond in the same way everywhere.

Region and season Common tendency during El Niño What to keep in mind
Parts of the southern United States, Northern Hemisphere winter Cooler and wetter than average. NOAA describes a broad area from central California to Florida and up the East Coast. State and local outcomes vary; this is a seasonal pattern, not a local forecast.
Australia and Indonesia Drier conditions and increased drought risk are common. Not every event or locality experiences the same effect.
Western South America Heavy or record rainfall can occur in parts of Peru, Chile and Ecuador during some events. Impacts depend on the event and location; this does not mean the whole continent is uniformly wet.
Atlantic and eastern/central Pacific hurricane basins El Niño tends to hinder Atlantic hurricane formation and favor more activity in the eastern Pacific, in part through changes in vertical wind shear. These are basin-level seasonal influences, not predictions about an individual storm or landfall.

Does El Niño determine what happens in my town this winter?

No. El Niño can change the odds of broad seasonal patterns, but it does not determine local weather. NOAA says the influence on U.S. weather is strongest in winter. A regional tendency cannot establish whether a particular town will be wetter, colder or stormier than usual.

For a local answer, consult the current NOAA CPC ENSO discussion and the seasonal outlook from the national or regional weather service responsible for your area. Look at the specific place and season in the outlook, rather than applying a continent-wide pattern to your location. NOAA’s FAQ addresses how El Niño may affect a particular region and emphasizes that impacts vary. NOAA CPC ENSO FAQ · NOAA’s frequently asked questions on El Niño and La Niña

Does El Niño cause a particular storm or climate extreme?

Not by itself. ENSO shifts average circulation and storm-track patterns, which can change seasonal probabilities. Individual storms and extremes have multiple influences, so it is not sound to label a specific event “an El Niño” event on that basis alone. For hurricanes, the basin-level tendency does not tell you whether a particular storm will form or where it will make landfall.

What is the current El Niño outlook?

In its diagnostic discussion issued September 10, 2026, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center listed an El Niño Advisory and said the event was strengthening. CPC assessed a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2026–27. That is a dated forecast probability, not an observed outcome or guarantee. Read the CPC diagnostic discussion.

The same discussion reported an August 2026 Niño-3.4 index value of +1.8°C, along with +2.5°C for Niño-3 and +3.4°C for Niño-1+2; the eastern equatorial Pacific sea-surface temperature anomaly exceeded +3.0°C. These are values reported for that diagnostic, not definitions of what a region will experience. CPC listed October 8, 2026 as the next scheduled discussion, so check its current diagnostic and local seasonal outlook for updated conditions.

The September 2026 CPC probability outlook uses the Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI). Its methodology combines models and observations, draws on a roughly ten-member forecast team and uses a 1991–2020 climatological base period. Seasonal probabilities can change as observations and forecasts are updated. CPC ENSO probability outlook and methodology.

How long does El Niño usually last?

NOAA CPC gives 9–12 months as a typical duration. That is a general duration, not a schedule for every event; the event’s evolution and its local effects vary. NOAA CPC ENSO FAQ
