Check that both devices are online, signed in to the same service account, and set to sync; then run that service’s manual sync option if available. Kindle, Kobo, and Apple Books each sync within their own ecosystems—there is no universal setting that links them together.
How reading progress sync is supposed to work
A reading service saves your position to its account or cloud service, then makes that saved position available to another supported app or device. If either device cannot reach the service, uses a different account, or has sync disabled, it may show an older location. The exact controls depend on the service, so first identify the app and device pair you are using.
- Open the same book in the two apps or devices you want to compare.
- Confirm both are connected to the internet and signed in to the expected account for that service.
- Check that sync is enabled on both sides, if the service provides a setting.
- Trigger a manual sync if available, then close and reopen the book on the other device.
If the location is still stale, use the service-specific steps below. Avoid changing sync settings in one ecosystem to troubleshoot another: Kindle, Kobo, and Apple Books do not share a common reading-progress system.
Fix Kindle reading position sync
Amazon says Kindle sync can save reading position, notes, and highlights to its servers for linked Kindle apps and devices. It is enabled by default, but requires an internet connection. Amazon’s instructions are available in its Kindle sync help.

Run a manual sync on a Kindle e-reader
- Connect the Kindle to the internet.
- Open Quick Actions or Menu.
- Choose Sync or Sync and Check for Items.
Check sync in a Kindle app or device settings
Amazon’s current instructions give these paths; labels can vary with software versions, so use the equivalent settings if your interface differs:
- Kindle app on iPhone, Android phone, Mac, or Windows: open Kindle, choose More, then Settings and Sync.
- Kindle app on iPad or Android tablet: choose More in the sidebar, then Settings and Sync.
- Kindle e-reader: choose More, Settings, Device Options, then turn Sync on or off.
- Account-wide settings: open Manage Your Content and Devices, then Preferences and Sync Settings.
Be careful when turning Kindle sync off
When sync is off, Kindle stops automatically saving data to Amazon’s servers and some features, including reading-position sharing, are unavailable. Amazon warns that notes, highlights, or bookmarks made while sync is off may be lost when it is turned back on. Kindle for Web continues saving data to Amazon’s servers during that period, but does not sync that data to other Kindle apps and devices.

Amazon’s cited settings page states that the Legacy Kindle app (formerly Kindle for PC) is unsupported as of June 30, 2026, and directs users to the new Kindle for Windows app. Because that is a dated support-status statement, check Amazon’s current guidance if you are troubleshooting the Windows app later.
Fix Kobo reading position sync
Kobo says reading progress automatically syncs between a Kobo eReader and the Kobo Books app. If they show different pages or locations, sync the reader and app, then reopen the same book to compare. This guidance applies to the Kobo pairing; it does not establish syncing between Kobo and Kindle or Apple Books. See Kobo’s sync instructions.

Fix Apple Books reading position sync
Apple Books uses iCloud to sync content and reading information across devices. Make sure each device uses the same Apple Account, has supported current software, and has iCloud Drive enabled with Books turned on. Apple’s full setup guidance is in Keep your books, PDFs, and audiobooks up to date with iCloud.
Check Apple Books and iCloud settings
- iPhone or iPad: in Settings, check iCloud Drive and ensure Books is enabled. Also open Settings > Apps > Books and turn on Home and iCloud Drive.
- Mac: open Books > Settings > General and select Home and Collections, bookmarks and highlights.
- All devices: verify that they use the same Apple Account and check that iCloud storage is available.
If a book still does not appear, check whether it needs to be downloaded or was hidden on that device. Apple identifies available iCloud storage as a possible prerequisite for accessing Books content across devices; buying more storage is not a guaranteed fix for every reading-position problem.

Which e-book ecosystem syncs with which devices?
Official support describes sync within each service’s account ecosystem. The documented pairings and remedies are not evidence that one platform is more reliable than another.

If the saved position still looks wrong
- Confirm you opened the same title and edition on both devices; different files or editions may not represent the same location.
- Check that both devices are online and use the same account for that service.
- Recheck the service’s sync setting and run its manual sync command if one is available.
- For Apple Books, also check iCloud Drive, Books settings, available storage, and whether the book must be downloaded or is hidden.
- Do not expect a Kindle, Kobo, or Apple Books sync control to carry progress into another service unless that service explicitly supports the pairing.
