A downloaded show or movie can fail offline because streaming downloads are controlled by the service, not stored as permanent video files. Check the app’s Downloads section and the exact status or error first: the title may have expired, disappeared from the catalog, been hidden by the account or profile, or been removed from the device. Avoid clearing app data, uninstalling the app, or resetting the device until you know whether that will erase your downloads.
Why downloaded streaming videos may not play offline
Streaming apps manage downloads under their own licensing, account, device, and playback rules. A download is therefore not equivalent to a video file you own and can play indefinitely with any media player. The service may require the app to verify your access, and the title may stop being available offline even while it remains visible in the app.
- The viewing period ended: A service may set a period during which a downloaded title can be watched or require the device to reconnect periodically.
- The title left the catalog: Licensing can prevent a title from being renewed or downloaded again after it leaves the service.
- The wrong account, device, or profile is active: Some downloads are tied to the account and device used to save them, while profile restrictions can hide titles.
- The local download is missing or damaged: Storage problems, app changes, or cleanup tools can remove locally saved content.
- The app cannot validate or play it: Incorrect device time, an outdated app or operating system, or a general playback problem can interfere even when a download is listed.
Start by identifying what happened
- Open the same streaming app and go to its Downloads section. Note whether the title is missing, marked “Expired,” still downloading, or accompanied by an error message or code.
- Check that you are signed in to the account used to download or purchase the video, and check the device on which it was downloaded. Netflix says downloads are available on the device used to download them. YouTube purchases and rentals must be accessed using the Google account used for the purchase. Netflix’s offline-download guidance and YouTube’s download guidance explain their respective rules.
- Check whether the title still appears in the service’s catalog and whether the app still offers a download option. A title that cannot be downloaded now is a different problem from a download that has expired or disappeared from local storage.
- Record the exact error before changing settings. Use the provider’s help page or support flow for that error if the basic checks below do not resolve it.
Downloaded title says “Expired”
An expired download usually needs to be renewed through the streaming service; it cannot generally be fixed by changing the device’s video-player settings. Renewal depends on the title still being licensed and available.
Netflix
Netflix directs users to delete an expired download and download the title again. If the title is no longer available on Netflix, it cannot be renewed or downloaded again. Some titles also have annual download or renewal limits. Follow Netflix’s expired-download instructions and check Netflix’s download troubleshooting guidance if the title remains available but the download still fails.

Disney+
Disney+ help says a device needs to reconnect to the internet at least once within 30 days, and a download may expire sooner if the title leaves the library. The 30-day interval is Disney+ policy, not a general rule for streaming services. See Disney+ download troubleshooting for current service details.
Rentals and purchases
Purchased or rented videos have account and rental conditions of their own. YouTube allows supported iOS and Android devices to download purchased or rented movies and TV episodes through the Google account used for the transaction; a rental remains subject to its rental period. Downloads missing from the app
First confirm the app, account, device, and profile. On Netflix, a Kids profile’s maturity setting can hide titles above its permitted rating. A missing title may also point to a device storage or permissions issue, an SD-card problem, or a cleaner app that removed local data. Netflix lists these causes and related checks in its guidance for missing downloads.
Be cautious with steps that reset the app. Netflix says uninstalling the app, resetting it, or clearing its app data deletes downloads. Do not take those actions until you are prepared to download the titles again—and only if they remain available. The same caution applies to a device factory reset: it removes downloaded content from all apps.

Can’t download a TV show or movie
If the title is not in Downloads because it never finished saving, check eligibility before treating it as a playback failure. Not every title or device supports downloads, and device support can change. Netflix lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, and Fire tablets among supported download devices; its current Windows app does not support downloads. Netflix also recommends current app and operating-system versions and notes that some Android devices are incompatible. Check Netflix’s supported-device and download information and its Windows app guidance.
Netflix’s current Help Center policy allows up to 100 active downloads at a time per device, depending on the plan. This is Netflix’s service limit, not an industry-wide cap. If you have reached the applicable limit, remove downloads you no longer need and try again.

Check the app and device without losing downloads
After checking the title’s status and account, try low-risk device and playback checks before reinstalling or resetting anything.
- Check date and time: Set the device to automatic date and time if the setting is available. Prime Video’s general playback guidance flags an incorrect clock as a possible authentication issue.
- Update the app and operating system: Install available updates, then reopen the app and try the download again.
- Check available storage and permissions: Confirm that the app can access the intended storage location. If downloads were saved to an SD card, check that the card is mounted and accessible.
- Turn off VPNs or proxies temporarily: Prime Video recommends disabling them as part of general playback troubleshooting.
- Restart the app or device: A restart is less destructive than clearing app data or reinstalling. Check the service’s error-specific instructions if the issue persists.
Prime Video’s recommendations above concern general playback, not a dedicated offline-download procedure. Its help also mentions connectivity and simultaneous-playback checks; those are relevant if the service is trying to validate access or the failure is not limited to one saved title. See Prime Video’s playback help. If none of the checks works, use the streaming service’s specific error-code article or support flow rather than assuming the local download itself is the cause.

Before leaving reliable internet access, open the app’s Downloads section and confirm that each episode or movie is present and playable. Check the service’s expiry or reconnection conditions and make sure you will have the account and device used for the download. For a Netflix download, remember that it is available on the device that saved it; for a YouTube purchase or rental, use the purchasing Google account. A tablet can be a practical offline-viewing device only if the service, title, and specific model support downloads. A new device will not restore a title that expired, left the catalog, or is blocked by an account restriction.
