YouTube’s 12-hour warning is about whether it saves an automatic archive and how far viewers can rewind—not a documented rule that automatically ends the live broadcast. If your lesson stream actually stops, check whether your encoder is still sending its feed and review the stream’s auto-stop setting. YouTube’s guidance does not identify the cause of an individual disconnection.
What YouTube’s 12-hour limit means
YouTube says a live stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured in an automatic archive. Streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but the archive is not guaranteed for a longer stream. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
This is an archive limitation, not evidence that the live broadcast itself must end at 12 hours. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not state that it automatically terminates a broadcast when it reaches that duration.
First identify what actually stopped
The live broadcast ended
Check the encoder’s output and YouTube Live Control Room status. Confirm the encoder is still sending to the correct YouTube stream URL and key, then inspect whether auto-stop is enabled. YouTube documents encoder setup and auto-stop controls, but those pages cannot diagnose a particular disconnection without your stream status and encoder logs. The broadcast ended, but there is no replay
This is consistent with YouTube’s warning that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep your own recording if the lesson must remain available afterward. A local copy protects the lesson recording; it does not extend YouTube’s automatic archive window.
The broadcast is live, but viewers cannot rewind far enough
DVR is separate from archiving. YouTube warns that rewind capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A missing replay and limited rewind are not, by themselves, proof that the live broadcast has ended. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams

How to troubleshoot a stream that really ends
- Check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Establish whether YouTube reports the broadcast as live, ended, or disconnected. Note the time and status before changing settings.
- Check the encoder. Confirm it is still running and sending video to the YouTube stream URL with the intended stream key. If the encoder has stopped sending, investigate its status and logs; the 12-hour archive warning alone does not establish why.
- Review auto-stop. In YouTube’s live stream settings, check whether auto-stop is enabled and whether its configuration matches your intended schedule.
- Separate broadcast continuity from replay needs. If the stream stays live but the replay or rewind is limited, address archive/DVR expectations. If the broadcast ends, investigate the encoder feed and settings instead.
- Preserve a local recording. For a lesson that must be available as a replay, maintain a local copy rather than relying on YouTube to archive a stream over 12 hours. YouTube does not prescribe a recording application or storage device.
Keeping a prerecorded lesson live continuously
YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos. That listing is not evidence that Gyre—or any other streaming workflow—bypasses YouTube’s archive or DVR limits. YouTube Help: Use an encoder to go live
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live around the clock. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps looping the video, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It offers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and a first day free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. This does not change YouTube’s archive or DVR limits. Learn about StreamNeo. Start the free first day.
