There is no single confirmed cause for every black screen when StreamYard streams a prerecorded video to YouTube. First check the video’s actual encoding: StreamYard specifies an MP4 file with H.264 video, and recommends AAC audio, constant 30 fps, Web Optimized/Faststart, Align A/V, and a total bitrate below 10,000 kbps. If the file plays correctly, trace where the picture disappears—inside StreamYard, in YouTube’s live preview, or on the public watch page—to narrow down whether the issue is the source, studio connection, or outgoing stream.
First locate where the picture goes black
A black screen can occur at different stages. Note whether audio continues, which screen is black, and whether the problem affects one viewer or several. These clues help focus troubleshooting; they do not by themselves prove a cause.
- The local video file: If it is black when played on your computer, investigate the file before changing StreamYard settings.
- StreamYard’s studio or scheduled broadcast: A black studio preview or spinning circle can point to a browser, device, firewall, or proxy issue, especially if the preview concerns a camera or screen share.
- YouTube Live Control Room or the public watch page: If the file plays locally but the outgoing picture is black, compare what StreamYard and YouTube show. If only one viewer sees the problem, their playback path may be involved; if many viewers on different connections report it, check the outgoing stream and encoder.
StreamYard’s help pages do not identify one universal cause or publish a frequency for this exact symptom. Work through the checks below in order rather than assuming a particular fix.
Check the prerecorded video’s format and encoding
Confirm the file contains a compatible video stream
StreamYard’s prerecorded-stream guidance specifies MP4 with H.264 video. An .mp4 extension alone does not confirm that the contents use a browser-compatible codec: MP4 is a container, and video inside it can be encoded in different ways. StreamYard also discusses codec compatibility for its long-form video-sharing or video-clip feature; that qualification applies to that feature and should not be treated as proof of the cause of every live-stream failure. See StreamYard’s pre-recorded streaming guide and media format guidance.

Play the exact file you selected for the broadcast outside StreamYard. Confirm that it shows the intended picture and has not been replaced by a black, damaged, or audio-only export. Then inspect its actual container, video codec, audio codec, frame rate, and bitrate using a media-information tool; do not rely on the filename.

- Total bitrate: below 10,000 kbps (10 Mbps)
StreamYard suggests HandBrake for re-encoding and recommends re-uploading the converted file if you have upload trouble or lag. These are compatibility and optimization recommendations, not a guaranteed cure for a black picture. Refer to StreamYard’s prerecorded-streaming instructions and video optimization guidance for current directions.
Check whether the StreamYard studio preview is the problem
If the black image is in the studio—particularly a camera or screen-share preview with a spinning circle—check whether a work device, workplace network, firewall, or proxy is blocking connections StreamYard needs. StreamYard documents this behavior for studio camera and screen-share media. That is a useful branch when the studio preview itself is affected, not evidence that a firewall explains every black prerecorded broadcast.

- Try the studio in a supported desktop browser. StreamYard recommends Chrome or Edge on desktop; check its current browser and device guidance.
- If permitted, compare with another network or an unmanaged device. If the preview works there, ask your workplace IT team whether a firewall or proxy is restricting StreamYard connections.
- Use StreamYard’s firewall and proxy guidance to discuss the restriction with IT rather than disabling security controls yourself.
These browser and network checks are most relevant when the studio’s preview is black; they do not establish a universal fix for a prerecorded upload that appears correctly in the studio.
Check the outgoing stream and YouTube preview
If the local file looks correct but the broadcast sent to YouTube is black, compare the StreamYard output with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and ask whether viewers on separate connections see the same thing. For outgoing-stream symptoms, YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s own output, source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and outbound internet connection.

- Confirm the source is playing correctly in the StreamYard broadcast, if a source preview is available.
- Look for relevant errors in YouTube Live Control Room and compare its preview with the public watch page.
- If multiple viewers report a black picture, inspect the outgoing encoder or connection and any available error indicators. If only one viewer reports it, compare playback on another device or connection before changing the broadcast.
- Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance. Its general encoder setup instructions cover a server URL and stream key for encoder workflows; do not change these merely because you use StreamYard’s native YouTube destination integration.
If the issue continues, YouTube advises reporting persistent live-stream issues after checking the encoder. Give support useful evidence: the file’s container, codecs, frame rate and bitrate; whether audio continues; the exact screen where the image becomes black; and whether one or many viewers are affected.
