Closing Remote Desktop can disrupt the graphics or audio devices that OBS is using, even if OBS still appears to be running on your Windows VPS. That is a plausible cause—not a confirmed diagnosis for every VPS. First identify whether the picture freezes, audio stops, OBS loses its YouTube connection, or the Windows session itself ends; each points to a different part of the setup.

What closing Remote Desktop can change

Remote Desktop (RDP) gives you a view of and access to a remote Windows session. Graphics for that session are encoded on the remote machine and sent to your local device, as Microsoft describes for Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Dev Box. That documentation provides context, but it does not establish how an unspecified VPS handles devices when an RDP client disconnects.

OBS forum users have reported two relevant problems: an RDP-related emulated graphics device disappearing on disconnect, interrupting capture, and an RDP audio device becoming unavailable, leaving desktop audio silent. These are community reports and explanations, not an official Windows guarantee. A stream can therefore fail at capture or audio while the OBS process still appears present after you reconnect.

Identify which part of the stream failed

  1. Reconnect to the VPS and check OBS Preview. If the picture is frozen or black, investigate the capture source and whether a usable display or graphics device remains available outside the RDP session.
  2. Check OBS audio meters. If the picture continues but meters are silent, investigate the audio source and whether the VPS exposes an audio device independent of RDP.
  3. Check OBS’s connection status. If capture and audio appear normal but OBS is no longer connected to YouTube, investigate encoder-to-YouTube transport and network state.
  4. Check whether the Windows session remains active. If it logged off or the applications stopped, ask the provider or administrator how disconnecting RDP affects session persistence.

This is a diagnostic sequence inferred from the distinct failure types in the reports; it is not a procedure validated for every VPS. A frozen preview, silent meters, and a lost YouTube connection are not interchangeable symptoms.

Ask your VPS provider what persists after disconnect

VPS configurations differ, and the available reports do not establish what your provider exposes. Ask specifically:

  • Does disconnecting the RDP client leave the Windows desktop session running, or can it end the session?
  • Does the VM have a supported display or GPU device available to capture software when no RDP client is connected?
  • Is there an audio device available independently of the RDP session?
  • Are there provider settings or policies that change session persistence or device availability?

A GPU-capable VPS alone does not establish that OBS capture will remain stable after RDP disconnect. Microsoft notes that GPU acceleration can help graphics-intensive applications and that a remote VM without a discrete GPU uses software encoding for RDP graphics; neither point guarantees OBS capture behavior on a particular provider’s VPS. The referenced Microsoft page was last updated October 23, 2025: Graphics encoding over the Remote Desktop Protocol.

Choose a fix that matches the workload

If you need live desktop or browser capture

Keep the capture environment available independently of the RDP client. That may mean working with the VPS provider or administrator to confirm a persistent session and supported display and audio devices, or moving the capture workload to a machine designed to remain available. The right option depends on your Windows version, OBS version, capture source, audio path, and VPS configuration; the cited reports do not rank specific VPS products or settings.

If you are playing prerecorded media

Continuous playback of uploaded video is a different workflow from capturing a live desktop. YouTube’s encoder documentation lists software encoders, standalone hardware encoders, and cloud services, including a service described for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. A prerecorded-media service does not, by that fact alone, capture a changing browser or desktop. YouTube’s encoder overview is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

If OBS is actually disconnected from YouTube

Check the stream destination and key in YouTube Live Control Room, and confirm the encoder supports the transport you selected. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; its instructions say to obtain the RTMPS URL and stream key in Live Control Room and enter them into a compatible encoder. RTMPS can address transport configuration, but it cannot restore a missing desktop capture or audio device. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom after reconnecting Likely area to investigate Next check
OBS preview is frozen or black Capture source, session state, or display/graphics device Ask the provider whether a supported display device remains available without an RDP client; check the capture source in OBS.
Video continues but audio is silent Audio input or RDP-dependent audio device Check OBS audio meters and ask whether the VPS provides audio independently of RDP.
OBS is not connected to YouTube Encoder or network transport Verify the Live Control Room URL and stream key and whether the encoder supports RTMPS.
OBS appears to run, but the stream stopped Possibly interrupted capture or audio despite a surviving process Inspect preview, meters, and connection status separately rather than assuming OBS’s process presence means the stream is healthy.
Windows or the applications have ended Session persistence or provider policy Confirm with the VPS provider whether disconnecting RDP can end the session and what settings govern that behavior.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is continuous playback of uploaded videos—not live camera, browser, or desktop capture—StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It can keep playing with your home computer off, offers automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and streams uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card required; the free day is one per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI works alongside cards. It is for uploaded-video playout on YouTube, not capturing a live desktop.
