If your YouTube live study stream says Upcoming, the scheduled event page is waiting for the creator to start the broadcast. For an encoder stream, start sending the feed, wait until its preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room, and click Go live. For a webcam stream, open the scheduled event under Manage and click Go Live. A trailer may play on the watch page before the actual live stream begins.
What “Upcoming” means
YouTube labels scheduled videos that have not streamed yet as Upcoming. A scheduled stream may appear in subscribers’ feeds with that status before it begins. So if you are a viewer, the page may be working as intended: the creator has scheduled an event, but has not launched its live broadcast yet. YouTube explains this in Manage live stream settings and Create a live stream via webcam.
If the announced start time has arrived and the stream still has not started, the creator should check the launch steps for their streaming method. A scheduled time alone does not start the broadcast.
What to check as a viewer
- Check whether the event is scheduled for later. If it is, Upcoming is expected until the creator starts the stream.
- Allow for the creator’s launch process. The event may remain Upcoming while the creator connects their feed and starts the broadcast.
- Check whether a trailer is playing. A creator can configure a trailer to play on the event’s watch page before the live stream starts. That is pre-stream content, not the study broadcast itself. YouTube documents this in Manage live stream settings.
- Confirm that the event is a Live stream, not a Premiere. YouTube describes a live stream as real-time media; a Premiere is a new video watched with the creator and community. The title by itself may not make the event type clear. See Watch live streams – Computer.
If the creator has not started the broadcast, viewers cannot make the scheduled stream begin from the watch page. Contact the creator or wait for them to launch it.

If you are the creator: start the scheduled stream
The correct launch action depends on whether you are using an encoder or YouTube’s webcam workflow.
Encoder stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the scheduled stream and confirm the YouTube server URL and stream key you are using. Keep the stream key private.
- Configure your encoder with that server URL and stream key, then start sending the video feed.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the stream preview to appear.
- Once the preview is available, click Go live. YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder specifies this preview-then-launch sequence.
Sending a feed and launching the event are distinct stages: starting the encoder does not replace the final Go live action in Live Control Room.

Webcam stream
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live tab and select Manage.
- Select the scheduled stream.
- Click Go Live to launch that event.
