ASCII art can look too dark because a converter compresses photo tones into a short range of characters, or because its light-and-dark mapping does not suit the background. It can look stretched because text characters are taller than they are wide, or broken after pasting because the text uses a proportional font or wraps. Check the display first, then adjust inversion, shape, and tone in that order.
How a photo becomes ASCII art
A typical converter shrinks the photo to a grid, samples each cell, estimates its brightness, and replaces it with a character from a density ramp. Characters such as @ are often treated as visually dense, while punctuation or spaces are lighter. The exact mapping varies by converter; for example, documented implementations use different luminance formulas, including ITU-R BT.601 weights (0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B) and Rec. 709 weights. There is no single rule shared by every converter. anbalabs explains its grid sampling and tone mapping, while HYPOTHESIS documents its image controls.
This is a lossy conversion: each cell stands in for many source pixels, so fine detail, thin lines, small text, and subtle outlines may disappear. A converter maps tone and density; it does not preserve every pixel or necessarily trace every edge. The academic paper “Structure-based ASCII Art” discusses the trade-off between tone-based rendering and preserving structure.
Why the result looks too dark, flat, or like a negative
Contrast and brightness do different jobs
When many areas become similar-looking characters, the source tones may be clustered into a narrow range. Increasing contrast spreads tones across more of the available character steps and can make shapes clearer. Brightness shifts the image’s overall luminance; adjust it when the whole output remains too dark or too light. Brightness alone cannot restore detail that was lost when the image was reduced to a character grid.

- Hardcover wrapped in linen: looks simple and stylish, which is sturdy to last for year
- Large capacity: it can hold 1000 4x6 inch photos, totally 100 sheets 200 pages, each pages holds 5 photos
- Cover window design: you can replace the window photo with any picture you want and The size of the photo on the window is 5x5 inch
- Album size: linen hardcover is 14.2x13.2x3.3 inches
- Multifunctional use: for valentines day mother's day thanksgiving day travel record wedding baby grow birthday and anniversary photo album, A memory book of our own adventures
TxtArt’s converter documentation puts the distinction this way: “Contrast usually helps more than brightness, because it decides where the density steps fall rather than sliding all of them the same way.” That is vendor guidance, not a universal guarantee; make small adjustments and judge the preview. TxtArt documents its contrast and brightness controls.
Inversion depends on the background
Check whether the output is meant to show light characters on a dark background or dark characters on a light one. If the result reads like a photographic negative, toggle the converter’s Invert or equivalent control and view it against the background where you plan to use it. The same character mapping can appear very different on a light page and a dark terminal.

A short ramp can flatten tonal differences
A short character ramp provides fewer tonal steps. If the photo’s values cluster together, many cells may map to similar symbols and merge into a flat-looking wash. Grayscale can make tonal relationships easier to assess; a shorter ramp may suit a small output, but it also reduces the number of available shades. More characters are not automatically better when the output must fit a narrow space.
Why the picture looks stretched or squashed
Text cells are not square. In many monospace fonts, a character cell is roughly twice as tall as it is wide. If a converter treats each character like a square pixel, the rendered image can look too tall or otherwise distorted. Enable a control named something like Correct for character aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio. The exact label depends on the converter.

Aspect-ratio correction is an approximation: fonts and display settings differ. Check the result in its final destination, because line spacing and the destination font’s cell proportions can change the appearance. TxtArt and anbalabs describe character-cell correction in their converter guidance.
Why it breaks after you paste it
If the preview looks right but the copied art becomes uneven, the problem may be display rather than conversion. A proportional font gives different characters different widths, so columns no longer line up. Use a monospace font in a code block, terminal, or other text area that preserves equal-width characters. Also turn off line wrapping, or reduce the output width until every line fits the destination. widantoo’s guide describes alignment problems after pasting.

A converter may produce valid aligned text that still wraps in a narrow chat pane, document, or mobile screen. Around 60–80 columns is one converter’s suggested starting range for README or terminal output, not a universal standard; use fewer columns when the actual destination is narrower. TxtArt’s documentation discusses output width.
Troubleshoot in this order
- Check the destination. If the preview is correct but pasted text is not, switch to a monospace font, disable wrapping, or lower the output width until it fits.
- Match the polarity. Toggle inversion if the art looks like a negative on its intended light or dark background.
- Correct the character shape. Enable the converter’s character-aspect-ratio correction. If distortion remains only after pasting, check the destination font and line spacing.
- Separate the tones. Raise contrast gradually if the image looks flat. Adjust brightness separately if the entire output is too dark or too light.
- Simplify the source. Crop tightly around a clear subject; try grayscale or a shorter ramp for a small output. A distinct silhouette and clear light-dark separation usually survive conversion better than a busy scene.
- Choose a width for the actual use. Wider output can represent more detail, but it may wrap in a narrow destination. Reduce width when alignment matters more than fine detail.
What no adjustment can fix
Increasing width or contrast cannot bring back every detail that a coarse character grid has discarded. Busy scenes, thin lines, small lettering, and low-contrast photos may remain hard to read. Start with a tightly cropped, high-contrast subject when possible. If the source photo itself needs cropping, grayscale conversion, or tonal adjustment, those edits may help before conversion; converter controls may be enough for simpler fixes. widantoo recommends high-contrast sources, and TxtArt documents source-image limitations.
