Apple Music can show the wrong album artwork when an item in your library has different artwork attached to it, or when your music library has not finished syncing consistently across devices. The right next step depends on whether the mismatch affects one item, appears on just one device, or is visible across devices.
First, narrow down where the wrong artwork appears
Check whether the problem affects one song, a whole album, or many unrelated items. Then compare the same music on your other devices and note whether it came from Apple Music or the iTunes Store, or was imported into a local library. These checks help distinguish an item-level artwork issue from a library-sync mismatch; they do not, by themselves, identify a definitive cause.
- One song or album on one device: inspect the artwork attached to that item in the library on Mac.
- Different artwork across devices: check Sync Library, the Apple Account in use, and whether the library update has finished.
- The same incorrect image across devices: local artwork controls may not change the image shown in Apple Music’s catalog. Apple Support’s guidance cited here does not establish a catalog-correction procedure.
Check artwork attached to a library item on Mac
Apple says songs, albums, and music videos bought from the iTunes Store or downloaded from Apple Music come with artwork. Artwork can also be added or changed for items in a local library.
- In Music on Mac, select the affected song or songs.
- Choose Song > Get Info, then open Artwork to inspect the image attached to the item.
- To ask Music to retrieve artwork for the library, choose File > Library > Get Album Artwork. This is Apple’s documented retrieval option, not a guaranteed fix for every incorrect image.
Apple Support’s article “Add artwork to content in Music on Mac” covers these controls. Changing artwork attached to a local library item does not establish that the Apple Music catalog image will change for other listeners.

Check Sync Library if devices disagree
Sync Library is the relevant check when the artwork differs between devices using the same music library. Apple says Sync Library requires an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription.
- Confirm each device is signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Confirm Sync Library is enabled on each device. Apple’s “Use Sync Library with your Apple Music subscription” guide describes how to enable it on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and iPad.
- On Mac or Windows, give the cloud library update time to finish; Apple describes an in-app status indicator for this update.
For iTunes for Windows, Apple refers to the corresponding feature as iCloud Music Library. Menu names and options can vary by app and operating-system version.

If music syncing itself is failing
If songs are not syncing properly to a device, Apple’s general sync-error guidance recommends these checks. They address music-sync problems broadly; Apple does not promise that they will correct artwork in every case.
- Update the computer and device software.
- Consolidate media files in the music library.
- Check whether third-party security software is interfering with syncing.
- Try syncing a small number of songs to identify whether a particular item is causing the failure.
Apple Support documents these steps in “Fix sync errors -5000, -69, 13010, and 13014.”
