The timing is the best clue: playback that starts at the end of a queue points to AutoPlay; playback that begins when something connects points to that device or its settings.
First, identify what triggers playback
Note what happens immediately before the music starts. Does a song begin after your queue finishes, when your phone connects to Bluetooth or USB, when CarPlay opens, when you put on headphones, or at a regular time? That distinction helps you find the control that can actually stop it.
| When playback starts | Likely trigger | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| After the last queued song | AutoPlay in the Music queue | Now Playing and Playing Next |
| When a car stereo or speaker connects | Bluetooth or USB connection behavior, possibly controlled by the accessory | Accessory settings and connection type |
| When CarPlay opens or a vehicle control is used | CarPlay, Siri, or a vehicle control | CarPlay and vehicle settings |
| When headphones or a nearby speaker connect | Audio routing or automatic AirPlay | AirPlay & Continuity settings |
| At a predictable time or after a particular event | A Shortcuts personal automation or a physical control | Shortcuts and the relevant accessory |
Turn off AutoPlay at the end of the queue
Apple defines Music’s AutoPlay control as a way to add similar songs and play them at the end of the queue. If unexpected music starts only after your selected songs finish, turn off the infinity-symbol control in the queue.
- While a song is playing, open the MiniPlayer in the Music app.
- Open the Now Playing or Playing Next queue.
- Tap the infinity-symbol AutoPlay control to turn it off.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes the queue control. The setting is associated with the current queue, so check it again if the behavior returns with a different queue.

Stop music from starting when Bluetooth or USB connects to your car
An iPhone can connect to a car stereo over Bluetooth or a USB-C or Lightning cable. Some car stereos may automatically resume or start audio when a phone connects; an Apple Support Community Specialist described this as expected behavior for some Bluetooth and USB accessories and advised checking the stereo’s own settings.
- Check the stereo’s source and settings for an autoplay or resume option, and turn it off if available.
- Try connecting with Bluetooth disabled, selecting a different source on the stereo, or using a different cable. Change one thing at a time to see which connection triggers playback.
- If playback still starts only with that stereo, consult the vehicle manufacturer about its autoplay behavior.
Apple’s guide to connecting an iPhone to your car covers Bluetooth, USB-C or Lightning, and CarPlay. The car stereo may control behavior that has no universal iPhone switch.

Check CarPlay, Siri, and vehicle controls
CarPlay audio can be controlled by Siri, the steering-wheel controls, the Now Playing screen, and the vehicle display. A play command from any of these controls can account for music starting when CarPlay opens or when a vehicle control is pressed.
- In Settings > General > CarPlay, select your vehicle and review the apps displayed there.
- If Apple Music is signed in on the vehicle display, sign out there. Apple’s car-support guidance also describes revoking the vehicle under Music app account access.
- Notice whether playback starts without touching the phone, or only after using a steering-wheel button, Siri, or the vehicle display. If it follows one control, check that control and the car’s settings.
Apple explains CarPlay audio controls and vehicle connection options in its car connection support article.

Review AirPlay and headphone audio routing
If playback starts when headphones connect or audio switches to a nearby speaker, review routing settings rather than the queue. In Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity, check Keep Audio with Headphones and set automatic AirPlay behavior to Ask or Never if you do not want audio to move to nearby devices automatically.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains streaming Music to Bluetooth and AirPlay-enabled devices. Changing routing can prevent an unwanted destination switch, but it may not stop a device that independently sends a play command.

Look for a Shortcuts automation or a stuck control
If music starts at a regular time or only after a specific connection, open Shortcuts > Automation and look for an automation with a play action. Disable or remove the one that matches the trigger.
A Shortcuts automation can also pause playback when the car’s Bluetooth connects. This is a workaround rather than a system-wide block on play commands, so use it only if pausing on that connection is what you want.

- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
If the problem follows one headset, stereo, or steering-wheel button, test that accessory separately. A stuck play control or accessory firmware setting can make the phone appear to start Music by itself.
If the cause is still unclear
- Repeat the test with only one connection method active, such as Bluetooth without USB, to isolate the trigger.
- Restart the iPhone and the accessory.
- If the behavior persists, update iOS and the vehicle or headset firmware.
Restarting and updating are general troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes. Apple’s published guidance does not identify a universal iPhone setting that suppresses every play command from connected accessories.
