First determine whether the blank appears between clips in the same playlist or during a transition between scenes; then check the source type, its visibility and restart behavior, and the scene’s source order.
First identify when the black frame appears
Watch for whether the blank occurs as one video ends and another begins in the same playlist, or when OBS switches between scenes. These are different cases: the documented restart-on-activation advice applies to a source becoming active during a scene transition, not to every gap between playlist items.
- Between files in one playlist: identify whether playback uses OBS’s VLC Video source or a playlist plugin. The official guide documents VLC Video playlists, but does not diagnose a specific setting as the cause of black frames between items. OBS Project’s Media Sources guide
- During a scene transition: check whether the target media source restarts when it becomes active. A 2020 OBS forum reply explains that, in the scenario discussed, the transition shows the frame displayed by the source when the transition starts; if that frame is black, the transition can show black. This is a scenario-specific forum explanation, not a universal diagnosis. OBS forum discussion
Check which OBS source plays the videos
VLC Video source
OBS’s VLC Video source supports a playlist and depends on VLC being installed. The OBS guide says that VLC must match OBS’s architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The guide lists playlist loop enabled and shuffle disabled by default; it also documents visibility behavior that stops playback when the source is not visible and restarts it when visible. These settings may help explain a playback interruption in some setups, but the documentation does not establish them as the cause of every black frame. OBS Project: Media Sources
Built-in Media Source
The built-in Media Source is documented for an individual media file, rather than a playlist. OBS lists “Restart playback when source becomes active” as enabled by default and “Show nothing when playback ends” as enabled by default. If the blank happens as a scene activates, inspect the restart option. If it happens between playlist items, first confirm whether multiple individual Media Sources or a separate playlist tool is managing those items. OBS Project: Media Sources

Media Playlist Source plugin
If you use the Media Playlist Source plugin, compare its installed version and playlist state with the plugin’s update history. Version 0.1.3, dated April 13, 2025, includes fixes for continuing after a transition and for cases where the next video path is the same. Version 0.1.2, dated March 10, 2025, includes fixes involving the last frame remaining after clearing a list and lag with an empty directory. These version notes identify issues addressed in those releases; they do not show that the plugin is necessarily responsible for your symptom. Media Playlist Source update history
Troubleshoot the likely causes in order
- Reproduce the symptom and classify it. Note whether the black appears between two files in one playlist, at the end of a file, or during a scene transition. Avoid changing several settings at once; otherwise it will be difficult to tell which change affected the result.
- Confirm the source type. In the OBS Sources dock, identify whether playback comes from VLC Video, one or more built-in Media Sources, or the Media Playlist Source plugin. The controls differ by source type.
- For a scene-transition gap, inspect restart behavior. Select the relevant built-in Media Source and check “Restart playback when source becomes active.” For the forum-described transition scenario, try disabling it and test the transition again. This is a targeted test for that case, not a general fix for gaps between playlist items. OBS Media Sources guide · Forum explanation
- Check visibility behavior for VLC Video. If the VLC Video source becomes hidden and visible as scenes change, review its visibility settings. The documented defaults stop playback when it is not visible and restart it when visible. Test whether the interruption tracks that change.
- Inspect source order and visibility. In the Sources dock, a source higher in the list appears above lower sources and can cover them. If the black area hides content that should remain on screen, check whether an upper source is covering it. OBS Project’s Sources Guide
- If using the plugin, check its version and list state. Compare the installed version with the update history, especially if the playlist has repeated file paths or was recently cleared. The fixes listed for versions 0.1.2 and 0.1.3 are relevant clues, not proof of cause. Plugin update history
- Gather details if the issue persists. Record your OBS version, operating system, source type, VLC version if applicable, visibility and restart settings, and a sample of the media files. Without those details, the available documentation cannot determine the exact cause.
What the reports do—and do not—establish
OBS’s own guides explain playlist support, media-source settings, and how source order affects what is visible. They do not name one universal cause for a black frame between playlist items. A user-submitted OBS Ideas post from April 2018 describes VLC playlist videos stopping and starting abruptly, sometimes with blank frames; it documents the reported experience, not an official technical diagnosis.
