If only some files in an OBS playlist show black, first check that you added them as playlist items in an OBS VLC Video source, then test a failing file on its own. Also check that the source is visible and not covered by another source. A file extension alone does not guarantee that its encoding will play, and the available documentation and user reports do not establish one universal cause or fix.
Check which OBS source you are using
OBS offers two relevant source types, but they are not interchangeable in how they handle playlists.
| Source | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | Testing or playing one media file | OBS documentation lists supported file extensions, including MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM for video. The extension list does not guarantee support for every codec or encoding inside a file. |
| VLC Video | Playing a playlist | Uses VLC libraries for extended media support and includes playlist controls. VLC must be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, VLC must also be 64-bit. |
For a single-file test, add the file to a Media Source. For a playlist, use VLC Video and add each file through the source’s playlist control. In one OBS forum case, a user had entered a stream link as the source name rather than adding it to the playlist; correcting that setup resolved that user’s issue. That is a useful thing to verify, not a diagnosis for every black-screen problem.
Work through these checks in order
- Verify the playlist items. Open the VLC Video source’s properties and confirm that each intended file appears in the playlist. Make sure you did not enter a path or link only as the source name.
- Check visibility and layering. In the Sources list, make sure the source’s eye icon is on. Temporarily move it above other sources; a source higher in the list can cover one below it.
- Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS. If VLC Video does not appear as a source option, install VLC. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Test a failing file by itself. Try it as a Media Source and, if relevant, as the only item in a VLC Video playlist. Compare its extension and encoding with a file that works. The extension list is not a complete codec-compatibility guarantee.
- Note when the picture disappears. Record whether it is black from the start, turns black at a playlist transition, or fails only after extended playback. Also note whether audio continues. These details help distinguish a visibility problem from a file or playback issue, but do not by themselves identify the cause.
- Look beyond OBS if the symptom is broader. If black video also occurs in other players or capture contexts, checking graphics drivers may be reasonable. One forum user reported that updating onboard graphics drivers appeared to help, but this is an anecdotal case, not a general fix for OBS playlists.
Check VLC Video settings only when they fit the symptom
OBS documents VLC Video controls for looping, shuffling, visibility behavior, network caching, audio track and subtitles. The documented defaults include looping on, shuffling off and network caching set to 400 ms. These are settings, not proven remedies for black video.

- If the failure occurs around playlist transitions, temporarily turn off shuffle and test a short playlist with the failing file. A forum user reported black video with audio while shuffling, but that report does not establish shuffle as a general cause.
- If the issue appears only after hours of playback, test with a shorter playlist and observe whether the same failure returns. A user report describes this pattern, but does not establish its cause or a reliable fix.
- Change one setting at a time and note the result. Avoid treating a changed cache value or playback option as a confirmed solution unless it actually resolves the issue in your setup.
What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
A black picture with continuing audio is a reported symptom, as is a video that fails on the next playlist item. Those reports are user experiences, not controlled diagnoses. Without details such as the file encoding, OBS and VLC versions, operating system, graphics hardware and source settings, it is not possible to determine whether a particular case is caused by media compatibility, playlist handling, visibility, software or graphics.
Use the simplest isolation test: if a file works alone but fails only in the playlist, focus on playlist setup and transition behavior. If the same file fails alone too, focus on its media compatibility and whether the source is configured and visible. Neither result proves a single root cause, but each narrows what to check next.
