YouTube’s published 12-hour guidance concerns whether a long stream is saved as an archive and how far viewers can rewind with DVR. If the live player itself goes offline, check the encoder and the connection sending the broadcast rather than assuming the archive limit ended it.
First identify what actually stopped
“The stream stopped” can describe three different problems. The distinction matters because an archive or rewind limitation does not, by itself, mean the live transmission ended.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API also distinguishes the incoming liveStream sent by a channel owner from the liveBroadcast viewers see. What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance does—and does not—say
It is an archive warning, not a stated live cutoff
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That warning is about the replay. It does not say YouTube automatically ends every live transmission at 12 hours. If the live player went offline, the archive limit alone does not explain why.

YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup. That protects against losing a replay; it does not keep a live broadcast connected. YouTube Help: Create a live stream on YouTube
DVR is a viewer rewind feature
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream while it is in progress. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. It also documents lower limits for some viewing setups, including Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions. These limitations affect how viewers seek backward, not a general requirement for the broadcaster to stop at 12 hours. YouTube Help: Use DVR on live streams

How to investigate a live stream that really went offline
- Confirm the symptom. Check whether the live player actually went offline at the reported time, or whether only the replay or rewind feature was affected.
- Check the encoder’s status and messages. Look for errors or an indication that it stopped sending the stream.
- Check encoder load and software. YouTube advises checking CPU load and updating encoder software.
- Test the outbound internet connection. The relevant connection is the one carrying the broadcast from the encoder to YouTube.
- Compare the encoder with YouTube’s live status. If the encoder appears healthy but the problem continues, YouTube suggests trying another encoder as a diagnostic step.
- For a long broadcast, make a local recording. Treat this as protection for the replay, not a fix for a dropped live transmission.
These checks narrow down where to investigate; without the stream’s status, encoder logs, or connection details, the cutoff time alone cannot establish whether YouTube, the encoder, or the internet connection caused a specific interruption. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream errors
