It does not, by itself, identify the cause or show that MP4 files—or kids’ streams—are inherently the problem. First check whether the encoder’s preview also goes black; that tells you whether to investigate the source change or the stream output and ingest path.
First isolate where the picture disappears
Compare the encoder’s own preview with the YouTube playback at the moment one video ends and the next begins. Note whether audio continues, how long the blackout lasts, and whether it happens at every handoff. These observations help narrow the fault; they are not a YouTube diagnostic procedure.
- The encoder preview also goes black: Start with the media source or switching method. Check that both MP4s are available and playable, whether the source or playback process restarts between files, and whether the active scene briefly loses its video.
- The preview stays normal but YouTube goes black: Investigate the outgoing encoder and ingest path. Note whether the stream uses RTMP or HLS before applying protocol-specific checks.
- Audio continues during the blackout: Record that detail with the duration and repeatability. It can help distinguish a picture/source problem from a broader interruption, but it does not establish a cause on its own.
The stream’s encoder, operating system, file codecs and frame rates, switching method, and ingest protocol are unknown here. Without those details or relevant logs, no single root cause can be confirmed.
Check how the MP4 handoff is performed
Determine whether the videos are played from a playlist, switched as sources or scenes, or handled by stopping and restarting a process. Watch the preview through a complete transition. If it blanks at the same moment, focus on whether the next file is ready and whether the active video source remains present during the change.

OBS documents that MP4 and MOV files require finalization: an interrupted write may leave a file unrecoverable. That is relevant if a file is still being written or is incomplete, but it is not evidence that switching between completed MP4 files should cause a blackout. OBS also distinguishes HLS, which uses separate TS files and a playlist that tells the player how to read them. OBS’s audio and video formats guide explains these container and playlist behaviors.
If the stream uses HLS, check HLS requirements
Apply this section only if the outgoing stream is configured for HLS. YouTube’s published HLS requirements include transport, segment, playlist and media-format details; they do not establish that this stream uses HLS or that an HLS fault is causing the blackout.

- YouTube Help specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST or PUT. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.
- YouTube’s developer guide specifies muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and support for frame rates up to 60 fps for HLS ingest. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.
Compare the actual outgoing segments and playlist with the documented requirements. If the stream uses RTMP instead, these HLS-specific segment and playlist rules do not apply.
Inspect encoder output and keyframes
When the preview remains normal, check whether the outgoing video stays continuous through the handoff and whether the files or source switch cause the encoder to restart or change output format. OBS says a consistent keyframe interval can help YouTube’s automatic quality selector transition smoothly between quality options. Change one relevant setting at a time and observe a repeatable handoff. If the symptom persists, retain the timing notes and any encoder or ingest logs when seeking help; changing hardware without locating the failure stage is not supported by the available evidence.
Does the fact that this is a kids’ stream matter?
The cited technical documentation does not establish a kids-specific YouTube behavior that causes a black screen at an MP4 handoff. Treat the timing of the blackout as the clue, and troubleshoot the media source, encoder and ingest path rather than assuming the audience designation is responsible.
